In the UK you have to be atleast 21 to adopt a child, plus if you're a single man (I assume your friend is) you have to go through a hell of a lot of tests and checks to adopt, and the authorities can just turn down your application if they think there's the slightest risk the adopter might have dodgy intentions. I checked this out recently as I'm thinking of adopting when I'm older :D

Couple of problems here.

1. What's the minimum age for Escapists? You said "When I turn 14." Implying that you're < 14.
2. Where do you live?

On the off chance that you're Australian.

No, he will never be able to legally adopt you in Australia barring change of Legislation.

Firstly, here, if you want to adopt someone you must have been at least 18 when they were born, ie. 18 years older than them. Usually it'll be more than 18 years.

Also, in Australia, it is very rare for one person to adopt, there usually needs to be a couple who prove they're in a stable relationship that's able to give a loving and supportive home to the child.

Fun fact on the topic of marriage, in Australia a court must give permission for someone under the age of 18 to get married, it requires extinuating curcumstance, which pregnancy does not constitute. Due to the change in social norms, it's perfectly fine for an unwedded woman to be a mother, thus no judge in Australia will allow a minor (here that's < 18) to be married for that alone.

I love the options.

wait till hes older
wait till you're older
wait till you're both older

As if one of you would suddenly stop growing.

Seriously, unless he's molesting you you can't do shit. The law accounts for angst stricken 13 year olds hating their parents.
However unlikely it may seem, perhaps the OP was allowing for votes reflecting which of the two is the limiting factor.
So for example they think the friend needs to be older however the age of OP is fine, or visa versa.

But you're right, it is funny.

well first you would need emancipated, and i doubt a court would emancipate a 13yr old just because you hate your dad, now if this was an abusive situation, that would be a different story.

Yeah sorry you have not provided enough information, your father must be unfit to take care of you in the eyes of a court.

Otherwise this is just another bullshit plan, it's perfectly legal for someone of age to 'adopt' you but you must follow the steps my fellow escapists have provided.

Emancipation.
Legal Papers.
And a good damn reason.

i think you probably have to 25, but i could be wrong. Even if i'm right, his parents could easily adopt you.

Everyone else has answered the question...
You need to have a stable job before you can adopt, I don't think your friend can provide for you.
You just seem to be going through an angsty teenager phase, I hated my mum at one point as well.
If you hate it so much, live at a Godfathers or grandparents house with the permission of your dad. I also find it strange that an 18 year old has befriended a 13 year old, but that's none of my business.
It wouldn't work, he's the only dad you have so stick with him. Unless he beats you, then you should go to a child support centre, and they'll help you.
And trust me, kid. If your dad is ever in jail like mine is, you will have a good reason to hate him.

God, 13 year olds these days...

EDIT: You have to prove one of these to a judge:
1) Abusive father
2) Inadequate care for the child (abusive father)
3) Involved in iollegal activities
4) Dad died.
damn... now all i need to do is prove to a judge hes dead :/

I hate my dad too but there are other options like...see a counsellor (that usually works for whiney 13 year olds) or move in with another family member. If he's really that bad then the social services should be involved anyway >.>

Depends on your age and GOd Parents. If you're age of legal consent (18 - Same as voting in Canada), then you can deem whether a God parent would be a bad guardian for you. If you're 13-14 like the OP, you don't have a choice

In Finland you have to be 25 to adopt a child, I have no idea what the age limit is for the child. I mean new born, young children I know nothign about that.
I'm not sure of the exact age the child has to be in America, but we actually adopted and picked my brother up when he was 7 days old, so I guess as soon as the parents give them up considering the legal work that has to be done.

I love everyone in this thread can't fathom the idea of an abusive parent and assumes OP is just being angsty. You assume because your parents were fine that its a the worst sin ever to dislike the people who brought you up. You consider being raised a privilege instead of the parent's duty. I though the escapist was smarter than that, but I guess was wrong...

OP you could get your friend's mom to write a letter to the government saying that you disowned your father, abut its not that simple. You have to go through a lot of stuff to show that your father isn't capable of raising you right. But really the deck is stacked against you so you'll just have to bend over and take it. Social services are your only choice if your dad is as bad as you say he is.

Just a note to everyone who has replied.
My dad has abused me when I was younger, he has stopped now, because I can fight back.
He has illegal DvDs in his closet, and keeps me around because its the law.
so could I use the abuse against him to get me out of the house?

Judges don't accept teen angst as grounds for adoption.

edit: Whoops just saw your updated post.

If he is abusive, call the police or the child services branch of your government.
