As a rugby player, its definately rugby. Try doing repeated sprints while you lift wieghts between the sprints for 80 mins and i mean heavy wieghts like firing a 14 stone foward into the air a few dozen times mixed in with the sprints or trying to push 8 brutes about the park in a scrum. Not to forget tackeling, rucking and running more lines. Taxes your aerobic and anaerobic capacities to the max.

Other than rugby, rowing is also extremly demanding

Mainly you only go off if you're bleeding, then only long enough for the bleeding to stop.
Around the 50-60 min mark you see people coming off because they're totally fucking spent. More common with forwards but sometimes a few fresh legs in the backs helps a fucking heap, too.

True enough, I wasn't really thinking about substitutions though.
It is hilarious when subs come on in a muddy game with their nice clean strips, always makes me chuckle at how out of place they look.

Lacrosse is an insanely demanding sport, I mean it's full on sprinting ALL the time, plus full body contact... viscious!

If we go by injury then cheerleading tops American football by a long way

otherwise the reality is compartivly rugby played by 120 pounders is just as demanding as if they were all 250lbs
a 100 pound jockey on a 1200 pound horse is much tougher in that respect

Racket sports : Squash (maybe paddle)
Contact sports : Rugby (over wrestling since it basically is wrestling combined with running)
Running sports : Football or a marathon
Water Sports: Water polo
Other: Skiing, Parkour/Freeruning, Rowing (that uses your whole body non-stop), Chess (exercise for the brain, an area that few other sports train)

It's impossible to put a single sport over all others since different sports require different skills. Running sports only require the use of legs with the need of the sport (i.e kicking in football). Contact sports generally require brute strength and running to a lesser extent than running sport. Racket sports need agility and quick mini-sprints along with good hand-eye coordination (squash and paddle require far more movement than tennis). On top, any sports that are done in hot climates are instantly more demanding than others since the heat kills your stamina.

You two win the thread. Lacrosse players are sprinters, long distance runners, basketball players, hockey players, football players and fighters all wrapped into one. Smash all those together and add the fact that you always have to be alert and thinking as well as the need for a very high level of dexterity and Lacrosse is the most demanding. Plus, I've played in temperatures into the mid 40's Celsius so there's the heat to contend with too.

I'd like to share the mental game needed for MMA fighters. On top of the physical demands that are present in the sport (which I feel is greater then any other) fighters have to think about their game plan who whole time. They have to work to set up that left hook, all the while making sure their hands don't drop too low because of the other guys leg kicks. The ground game in MMA is a great example of the kind of strategy needed in an MMA match, Ju Jitsu is pretty much human chess (rolling is also one of the hardest things I've done in terms of physically demanding).

A little while ago, me and a friend got into a discussion about sports, becuse I am planning on joining the swim team next year. We both agree that swimming is the most physicly demanding sport, because you have to deal with water resistance and you have to go fast.

All pride aside, what do you thing is the most physicly demanding sport and why
Yep, swimming. Why? Because to be a really good swimmer you need to train your muscles(all your muscles). All other sports although harder to play, aren't as demanding(you can run fast, but can't lift heights; or you can tackle good but don't have a strong back- in any other sport you don't need an all around working condition body to be able to play it well).

As much as it pains me to say it, NASCAR. There is a lot of force working against you when you have to drive a car around a turn at 180 MPH. Coupled with the fact you will be doing this for as much as twelve hours, makes it very demanding.

That's all I can say on it but I honestly can't tell you if it's more or less physically demanding as other sports seeing as I don't really read into sports.

I reckon Aussie rules football is way more demanding than any of those listed in the OP. The average player runs about 10k's in two hours whilst getting the shit beaten hout of him.
As in AFL? No way. Rugby is much harder.

OT: Any endurance races. A 100m Freestyle (swimming) race is less demanding in my opinion than jogging 50km. This only really applies if this is a race.

Also, In Australia, Football =/= Soccer to alot of people.
