A little while ago, me and a friend got into a discussion about sports, becuse I am planning on joining the swim team next year. We both agree that swimming is the most physicly demanding sport, because you have to deal with water resistance and you have to go fast.

All pride aside, what do you thing is the most physicly demanding sport and why

I think Track and Field is the most physically demanding sport of them all because sure everyone can run but its doing all the little things that takes its toll on the body.

This is a pretty ridiculous question because in every sport there is more than just "It's this demanding". They are demanding in completely different ways. I mean we can probably all agree something like darts is the least physically demanding sport, but deciding the most is MUCH more difficult.

EDIT: Forgot to say, in my opinion something like gymnastics (olympic level) is very demanding because you need to be able to use ALL your muscles equally well, and stay in top shape all the time.

From the sheer amount of activity and physical abuse, I'd have to go with Lacrosse or Hockey.
ed- oh, there's a poll. Those aren't on there. Consider them write-ins.

I'm american so in my world it has to soccer(football is played by men in pads) because I have played soccer and other sports such as baseball, basketball, and track and soccer has got to be the most demanding. The amount of running involved is tremendous and you need stamina on top of it.

I accidentally voted soccer. Then I realized there was swimming. I did swimming for three years and let me tell you that shit is fucking demanding. It may not seem tough, but think of this, Micheal Phelps has to eat 12,000 calories every day to keep up with his training regime.

I would agree with this.
Plus, you'll have proponents of all different sports bickering over why they think theirs is more demanding then any other. And who is right and who is wrong? I would say MMA fighting is probably the most physically demanding, especially when you take into account cutting weight, But as Icecold just said: He thinks it's Gymnastics. Both are undeniably demanding physically, and I think it would be near impossible, short of a scientific, clinical study, to find out who is more right.

I'm going to go out and say Mixed Martial Arts.

These guys train soo much, they have to be good in all aspects of the sport (striking, takedowns, ground game) as well as physically and mentally tough as nails.

I would guess that Tennis is one of, if not the most physically demanding. Especially with some of the temperatures they play in.

Rugby's like American football with no padding, and when a player is tackled the ball is just passed and the game goes on - no breaks in the action.

That said, I've heard team rowing is enormously demanding, and I can believe it.

Parkour
That is considered a sport, right?
I think Parkour isn't considered a sport, but Freerunning is. They're basically the same except Freerunning is about the style, while Parkour is more of a transport/pastime focusing on fluidity of motion. I could be wrong of course, but either way I would vote Freerunning. Or Parkour, as the case may be.

Coming from a track athlete, competitive wrestling is the most physically grueling sport. Wrestling is less of a hobby and more of a lifestyle, as when they are in-season, every decision made affects their entire competition. From experience, I can say that track is not ridiculous when it comes to physical strength and fitness. We can be quite lax in our training and still be good. That isn't really true in wrestling. Even one bottle of water before a wrestling match can put you into a different weight class, leading to you getting crushed. From my limited knowledge of sports, I would say that wrestling is the most demanding.

Wrestling by far. Sweet jesus, you've never been so tired after 2 mins I garantee you... not only do you need the eundurance and stamina to fight off your back, and bring others down you need the strength to do it as well.
