It's hard to choose between 1 and 2. Both were great in their own ways. But I suppose I'd have to give a slight edge to ME1.

In my opinion BioWare changes core gameplay and mechanics too much between the games in a series. It's abundantly clear in Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Mass Effect 1 plays almost totally differently than 2 and 3. Without going into some long analysis anyone who has played them all will know what I mean.

Dragon Age 2 was changed, far too much, from Dragon Age Origins. DAO played like a tactical squad based RPG. DA2 plays like an action hack and slash game. That's NOT what people fell in love with, BioWare.

They strike gold with a series, then start messing with them too much. I understand the desire to improve and make it "more fun" but it seems to me it should be more important to refine and add to what you already have, rather than ripping things out and changing it completely.

"Mass Effect 3 is the worst thing humans have done since the Holocaust."
That a little strong don't you think?
Well, you should know that if you don't agree with all of my opinions you're wrong.
Secondly the Holocaust is still worse. You just have to go back to World War 2 before the badness of Mass Effect 3 is overshadowed.

The captha's appropriate at least "Geronimo!" because if you don't get the sarcasm in this post then I'm jumping head first into a troll tank.
The Mass Effect series is like having an exquisite pristine sports car.. Then Mass Effect 3 strolled over with a baseball bat and bashed in the hood.

Mass Effect 2 is still my favorite game ever, so it's naturally the best in the series for me (with #2 being Mass Effect and #3 being Mass Effect 3).

And as a guy who has played Mass Effect at least a dozen times, most of which were mostly complete ("mostly" because screw finding Salarian IDs and equivalent items): The Mako is not fun. Yes, I prefer planet scanning to the Mako. Because blech.

If Mass Effect had better side mission locations (generic desolate garden/arctic/desert worlds with copy/pasted buildings), it might give Mass Effect 2 a run for #1. That game got a lot right. More than anything, its tone was pitch-perfect. God, if felt so truly sci-fi. With that soundtrack and the wonderfully designed Citadel (the first game's Citadel is still my favorite because of how cohesive it is). It was actually probably the worst as far as conversations go, though. Tali and Joker didn't have much to say. Liara was just awkward (she made a great turnaround in the second game). The rest just had relatively short conversations after each main mission (Tali had even less). But it wins so many points for it's tone, the soundtrack, and the villain. Saren was fantastic.

The third game screws up in some key areas, but is near-perfect in many others. The soundtrack actually might even be better than the first game's. The gameplay is great. There are some variables that make repeat playthroughs feel fresh. And there are so many emotional (from laugh-out-loud funny to touching to heartbreaking) moments packed into it. But the screw-ups are kind of mind-boggling. There's the ending, which I won't comment on further. But there are other things too. Why does Shepard speak so much on his own? Why is there so little dialogue with Kaiden and Ashley? Why does Joker need a sexbot? Even bigger than those are the choices from past games that amounted to next to nothing. Like the god damn Collector base! Holy shit, what a letdown that was. It affected a line of dialogue and a bit of scenery in one section of the game. That's it? And freeing/killing the Rachni Queen in the first game. Let her go and she comes back captured. Kill her and the Reapers "make a new one" (albeit a less trustworthy one towards the end of the game, it turns out). Saving/Destroying Maelon's research, scanning the Keepers, choosing Anderson as the human council member. Huge letdowns, all of these.

I loved them all equally, though none of them were perfect games.

I liked the story of ME1 best out of the three.
I liked the characters of ME2 best out of the three.
I liked the combat of ME3 best out of the three.

For the longest time it was Mass Effect 1, I finshed that game at least a dozen times.
But since ME3 came out, I've been looking back and really, I have to say ME2.
I loved the characters, the atmosphere, working with Cerberus(I'm one of those Cerberus supporters before BioWare retconned them and made them go full retard in ME3)
Also, as a renegade player I have to say, Renegade Shepard is just the most badass in ME2, in my eyes you got to be the ultimate anti hero.

Sure it had cons as well, planet scanning for example, but as a PC player I got to fix that problem with a savegame editor, so it never bothered me much.

Mass Effect 3 had the best combat, but as far as enjoyability of expansion packs, overall gameplay, and storyline, I'd have to go with Mass Effect 2.
