Not to my knowledge. It's like Pink Floyd of Led Zeppelin, it's recognised as part of the rock genre, not metal. Metal =/= Rock.

- "Blue Öyster Cult was the thinking man's heavy metal group."

Yes Blue Oyster Cult is recognized as metal. Many people aren't aware of this because It isn't headbanger music. Metal can be a lot gentler than many people realize. Also I'd like to point out that while it's true that rock and metal aren't synonyms "Heavy metal (often referred to as metal) is a genre of rock music"- Wikipedia (not the best source but right most of the time).

Edit: Led Zeppelin too somewhat, though this is controversial in some corners of the internet.

It's Power Metal, of course. Let me walk you through this.

...I could go on endlessly. Blind Guardian, Freedom Call, Vexillum, Falconer, Dragonforce...

As if Power Metal isn't on there.

Or Prog.

Or, y'know, any of the 367 billion types of metal that got left off...

Now that I think about it, as a niche, we metalheads spend waaaay too much time fucking around with labels.

You're using someone's opinion as a fact there man. That William guy can say Blue Oyster Cult is metal all he wants, I can think Cream is metal. But at the end, it's a factual thing. And Blue Oyster Cult does not have metal riffs. That is how the metal genre is judged, the riffs. Tony Iommi is the man credited with the creation of the metal riff, the defining element of the genre. The album "Paranoid" is largely considered the first heavy metal album, though that is subjective. The former, however, isn't.

Could complain about the poll options but lots of others have done it for me - FWIW my specific nitpick would've been "what, no grind?!?" :p

But then someone went and posted that Sleep link and that made me happy :)

Anywho I like pretty much all the subgenres of metal. I'm not even sure how I'd go about picking my favourite dozen metal bands but there's certainly be a lot of genres represented - thrash (Metallica, Slayer, The Haunted, Kreator), death (Nile, Morbid Angel), doom (5ive, THE WIZZZZZZARD!!!!, High on Fire), classic (Maiden, Sabbath, Grand Magus), grind (Napalm f&*king Death, Nasum), bits and pieces of black and power metal and whatever the hell you choose to call Lamb of God, Pantera, Meshuggah... but I guess thrash will always be my first love so that's what I voted.

I always thought Nightwish was symphonic metal, unless that counts as a sub-genre of power metal. :/
(Music categorisation is not my strongest subject!)

Grunge is metal? Ok then.

Where's the metalcore option? Because that's my favorite.
I'm probably with this guy, but it's close. I love metal, but I'm fairly picky, and there's a lot of shitty metalcore that I really dislike. As for my favourite band, it's a dead heat between Anthrax, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Machine Head and Parkway Drive.

Uh, not to be an elitist dick-waffle, but as a big metal head, I disagree with a lot of your categorizing in the poll.
-Grunge isn't even close to being a genre/sub-genre of metal...
-"Pagan metal" isn't an actual genre (But I don't consider any "[instert religion] bands" separate genres personally). Amon Amarth is firmly in the melodic death metal sub-genre of death metal and, even though this is the first I've heard them, Hagalaz' Runedance sounds really folk metal-y, so why isn't it in that category? Aso, I think that a lot of bands that you'd maybe consider to be "pagan metal" would be very folk metal oriented.
-Death metal is a VERY broad category (almost as broad as just saying "metal") with numerous sub genres. For your examples, Meshuggah is progressive death metal, and I'd consider Behemoth to be black metal actually (but I can also see them categorized as regular death metal with some black metal influence as well).
-Nine Inch Nails is not Nu-metal. Nails is most definitely industrial.
-I dislike joke answers to polls. They throw off the data. Also, you must make all joke answers involve "bacon" in some way if you insist on using them.
I agree with this guy too (although I did say metalcore, and I'm sure people would disagree with me on that being metal, but I'd definitely consider metalcore along the lines of modern Killswitch Engage or Parkway Drive as metal, whereas stuff like Every Time I Die I consider more to be punk).
There is grunge metal, I was tired after work when I wrote that. There are only 9 or so slots for a poll so I couldnt fit power, but it SHOULD of been on there I agree.... Iced Earth!!!

Tough between Pagan and Folk...

Also no Pirate Metal? That stuff's badass.

S'pose it counts as Folk though.

No room for classic metal?! You have to honour your elders!

That's the only metal I listen to.

Poll is terrible, but damn do I love me some 'Shuggah. And all things uber heavy, progressive, or otherwise suiting my tastes.

Also, I've always felt that the more metallic hardcore bands belong in the same conversations as metal, because even if Converge/ETID/Dillinger aren't metal, they sure elicit the same feelings from me, and they're way different from stuff like Bad Religion (who also has a fantastic new album out).

Death Metal is probably my favourite genre to be specific I would probably Technical Death Metal.
Just came out today and I have been listening to it a fair bit.

Also not to be very picky but I don't like the categorization of a lot of bands in the OP

I'm a fan of Power Metal, a la Manowar and Rhapsody of Fire.
Though really, I like most types of metal, power is just the one my favourite band (Manowar) belongs to.

Pagan metal is separate from folk/death/black? What the heck? I think if you really want to differentiate based on lyrical content this could get stupid. However, if you go by sound and style, I think you should eliminate grunge and your joke item from the options entirely while merging "pagan" into folk for now. This would let you include things like Progressive, metalcore, or "classic metal" as options.

No Avantegarde/Experimental metal option means no vote from me either though I think Prog, Power of Doom all deserve options to but sadly poll limits etc.

And by Avantegarde I don't mean hipster metal. I mean Diablo Swing Orchestra, Devin Townsend (the Deconstruction album), Stolen Babies etc. The kind of stuff that throws in influences from all over the place.

Well supposedly children of bodom is melodic death metal, so yea that one. I also really like slipknot, in flames, avenged sevenfold, and Metallica. But children of bosom takes the cake. As a side note, I just saw mr Marilyn Manson live and that was sick, and the openers Butcher Babies were also really good.
