I'm surprised that Dune didn't come up in your original list. Though I guess it's a tad inaccessible to those who don't want to read 6 dense tomes of symbolism and 8 franchise cheapening cash grabs.

Dune has been my favorite for several reasons: First, it's what got me into Sci-fi. Second, it's unapologetic density, you really need to pay attention to understand why anyone does anything. Third, Shai-Hulud.

I voted for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but my absolute favorite is actually The Restraunt at the End of the Universe. Same series though so I think I'm ok.

Huh...difficult to decide...

Ok: Tv/Movie: Firefly
Books: 1984, Hyperion, Early Cyberpunk(before it died from a lethal dosis of reality)
other: Warhammer 40k fluff

...I'm a sucker for cargo cults(adeptus mechanicus ftw!) and "high tech, low life"

If you start to include books the remit becomes utterly massive. To the above list I would add:
Wells, Verne, Vonnegut, Orwell, Banks, Brin and my four current favourites (all Brits) Douglas Adams, China Mieville, P.F. Hamilton and Alastair Reynolds. Add those to all the others mentioned in this thread and you've got a ridiculous number of possibles.

I know Mieville isn't really S.F. but I really wanted to mention him.
I'm still not sure on Mieville. Perdido Street Station and The Scar were really good, But Iron Council was pretty meh for me. Too much political stuff.

As far as Sci fi shows go:

-Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Heres hoping Stargate Universe is good.
-Battlestar Galactica. Heres hoping Caprica is good.
-Babylon 5
-Farscape
-Star Trek Voyager. The only one of the entire franchise that was barable...enterprise is a close second.

Farscape. It was so... Different. Pilot and Rygel looked real, and so did the other aliens, more believeable than, say, Gorn, or Jar-Jar etcetera. And, new evidence has surfaced, if Season 5 (PK Wars) wasn't compressed down to 3 hours, the univers would have exploded from the awesome.

Thanks to George Lucas it is now Star Trek The Next Generation.

I still love Star Wars mystical and heroic stuff, but it is as perfect for me thanks to prequels and all that stupid midichlorians nonsense.
