If I were a fantasy character I would use my bare fists and magic/superpowers. I was never a sword guy, but, if I absolutely had to use one it would be just a regular broadsword. Boring, I know, but it's got a familiar feel and it's reliable.

Personally, I like a long/bastard sword, specifically something that I can use either one handed or two handed, depending on whether I want an off hand weapon/shield. Though the only sword I've actually trained with is a rapier

Not really.

Katanas, like ninjas, have been blown way out of proportion.

They're a trope, they couldn't really cut through anything more than an unarmoured opponent, and good luck trying to block anything with it.

Thanks to a previous poster, just remembered twin hooks. Screw my 4th string sword, these are fun. (note I haven't used them at all just going by technique and design)

And even though it's not an actual sword...

Swords: I have a preference for bastard/long/hand-and-a-half swords since they can be used with one or two hands.

Any weapon: A spear or any type of polearm. I like the idea of having the reach, the larger angular momentum when swung, and also the shaft of the weapon as some form of defense.

A katana made from a master smith.
So sharp it can cut a piece of paper dropped on it, or more practically, cut a man in two, right shoulder to left belly in a single swing.
I wanna see any european sword make that.
You mean like any greatsword/zweihander/flammenschwert? Ok.
Now show me a Katana capable of going through the metal plating of body armour.

Also please show me a katana that slices paper dropped on it.

The rule of cool dictates that katanas are just better.

That said, if the falcata had also been used by samurai, putting them on an even footing vis-a-vis mythic awesomeness, nobody would know what a katana is.

I've always quite liked the Kukri myself, but you gota love the Katana too. Yes, I know it's overhyped an all, but it's still an awesome design.

Bigger European swords didn't need to cut through anything.

The sheer amount of force that could be put into a swing would crush and cleave through anyone unlucky enough to get in it's way.

If a Samurai were to fight a European Knight, the Samurai would lose every time.

The katana is not a blocking weapon, and a shield was not used with it, that pretty much puts the Samurai at a huge disadvantage already.

Even if the knight forgoes the use of a shield, many European swords are sturdy enough to block attacks with, and very capable of blocking a blade as fragile as a katana.

Then we've got armour. Samurai armour is made from the same crappy metal as their swords, while a knight wears armour that a katana wouldn't stand a chance in hell of cutting through.

I like katanas, I like the way they look.

But they're really bad swords.

They all have a great many advantages depending on the situation. I generally prefer the bastard sword for it's versatility as well, but there's a lot to be said for dual daggers as well.
