So long as they don't mess with the mods and keep to the agreement that all alpha purchasers would get every future version of Minecraft for free, I don't care.
And of course they need to keep the game available for all of eternity, even in the event the universe explodes or something like that.

I'm happy for Mojang people. That's kind of a really success that inspires lots of developers out there. Minecraft is a gem, very well crafted. Kudos!

This, pretty much. They could sell the game to EA for all I care if they'd keep it basically the same as it is now and don't dick over the mod developers.

I don't blame them for taking the money one bit, but I do worry for the future of Minecraft. I still like to play with my friends from time to time.

If i played minecraft i would probably quit but i would not expect anyone to turn down 2.5 billion.
Everquest landmark is poised to take over anyway so it will probably be a massive loss for microsoft, and notch is free to start over with 100000x the capital so it is probably a good thing on the whole.

I don't really mind it. If you have no intention of staying in the first place, you may as well leave with a cool $2.5 billion in pocket. Anyway, I think it is a pretty strange move to buy Mojang now. Minecraft has sold about as much on every platform as it is going to, and the only extra sales are going to be those who were late to the party, but I can't imagine that it is going to be $2.5 billion worth of sales, and expecting Mojang to make another game that sells like Minecraft is pretty much expecting lightening to strike twice. Not impossible, but damn hard.

As long as they don't mess with how Mojang are handling Minecraft now, I couldn't care less what they do.

This. I haven't played Minecraft in a couple years. I think I'm done with it as long as my friends don't start up servers. That said, it would be a bummer to know I couldn't play it anymore due to it being repurposed as a bland cash cow. The title will still exist, but will it really be Minecraft? I doubt it.

How do I feel about it? Easy.

'And not a single fuck was given that day'

If Microsoft acquired an IP I actually cared about I might feel something one way or another, but as is, It's a company I don't really like buying a thing I forget exists from time to time.

A bit... Hmm. Conflicted. I can understand the decision. I don't fault Herr Persson for doing it, he's explained his reasons and they're all fair enough. He's been immensly lucky, and it'd be petty of me blaming him for taking the opportunity.

Not to mention, he could very well reinvest in other ventures further down the line, which would hopefully mean more job opportunities and more good games. I doubt he'll retreat to rest on his laurels for the rest of his life.

Even if he does, he's still paying taxes. Muahahaha...

On the other hand, I'm afraid for what Microsoft might do with the game. I'm personally in it for the mods. That is what interest me in the first hand. And I am worried Microsoft won't look too kindly to those and implement measures to stop them. While it wasn't particularly expensive, it'll be a purchase I won't have any further enjoyment from if vanilla Minecraft is locked down as the only allowed form of enjoying the game.

There will, no doubt, be something to fill the gap. Perhaps some Feed the Beast stand-alone, or perhaps EverQuest Landmark leads to something that'll scratch the same itch. Something will come along. But it'd be a shame if the potential of modded Minecraft was fumbled away by a detached Microsoft manager.

I don't possibly see how this can end well for Microsoft. Seriously, I don't see them making 1/10 of that back, and would bet a week's wages that it doesn't return a profit.

From Mojang's creators POV though I feel happy for them. I would naked through (insert ridiculous place here) for a 1% of that.

I fully understand Marcus' reasons for wanting out of the whole circus. He isn't really comfortable in the spotlight, and I understand how crippling Minecrafts success must be to his creativity and even productivity. It can't be easy to distance yourself from that, so selling for enough money to retire forever must feel like a small salvation for him.

It will be interesting to see how MS handles this deal. I think they might surprise a few people, but time will tell I guess.

I think TB's point of view neatly encapsulates how I feel about it.

While I haven't played Minecraft in ages, it's become so massive that if it starts to decline in quality, or versions on non-Microsoft devices are relegated to the dustbin, then no one will profit.

Microsoft have something up their sleeve, almost certainly expansions or a sequel. They bought Mojang for over twenty times it's profit in 2013, Microsoft may be many things but they aren't stupid, they clearly expect to increase revenues massively somehow and pushing a years old game that most people will have already bought won't cut it.

I think Microsoft wasted that money.

They lost the most important people at the company, and Mojang updated Minecraft for free most of the time. All of the time? have they ever charged for an update?

If Microsoft starts charging for Minecraft updates the backlash will be catastrophic, and Mojang isn't worth anything if you strip it down for parts.
So basically they just funded Notch's next thing, and now he has enough money to license the title "Scrolls" from Bethesda.

10 out of 10 Microsoft, would be dumb again.

My laptop won't run anything past the post-release 1.6 so I don't really care that much. It might go down the drain eventually but I think Microsoft are smart enough to not screw up a game with a fanbase this huge.

Why? I mean, Minecraft has already hit its peak in terms of popularity. At this point everyone knows about Minecraft, and they either already own it or dont care about it. I highly doubt any game they make after this will hit Minecraft levels of success.

With $2.5 billion dollars, Microsoft could have made at least 10 new IP's, thats ten new things that MICROSOFT OWNS. Each of those games would have the potential to hit it big, and every single one of those games would be guaranteed a sequel. No wonder Microsoft isnt doing as well this generation, instead of making new things, its just buying out shit. The XBone needs more killer apps, and Minecraft wont do it for them

As someone who brought Minecraft for the PS3 I'm hacked off about it. I'l probably never see an update or bug fix for the rest of time.

On a side note I just can't understand why they did it. Minecraft is literally Mojang's only product of any significant value and now they have launched on consoles I'm not sure there is huge sales potential left there. No other meaningful IPs mean that there is nothing to be gained from a development perspective that couldn't have been done in-house. Finally given that the company founders have left as part of the sale I can't see they are gaining anything substantial in the way of academic capital or creative vision. In short I'm stumped as to what they saw there to value at $2.5billion

I don't really care. Minecraft wasn't ever going to be put onto the Wii U or 3DS and now that Microsoft owns Mojang, I guess I can't stop holding out hope that it might, some day, in some capacity, make it onto one console or the other. I don't know of anything else Mojang has made though so it could just be that Microsoft spent a bunch of money on one game and a name...
