I definitely agree with you, though if you really know what you're doing, even stuff like Steam can run pretty well on Linux. I have a friend who runs Gentoo on his laptop and managed to get Counter Strike Source running better under Gentoo than it did under XP on the same laptop. Mind you, it took a hell of a lot of fiddling and pretty much every time he updated his system or the game was updated he had to fiddle some more. And of course there are still some games that will work better than others, or not work at all no matter what you do. He didn't mind it too much, and I think it helped that he quite literally knew his OS inside and out, but even if I knew enough to do what he did I'm not sure I'd want the hassle. It's tempting since it can be so customizable to the users needs, but there's so much effort involved in maintaining it all.
Oh yeah, definitely. I haven't spent much time with Steam, So I don't bother looking up ways to optimize it. If you look at a some of the Linux (or any other OS/Subject) gurus, they can do some amazing stuff. You look at their tutorials and it's "Eh...I really don't want to spend two hours doing that"

Somethings are simply impossible to get around like, Microsoft Zune software, you can't run it in anything but a Virtual box of windows.

I was really terrified of my terminal when I first changed over to Ubuntu, but it's become my bestfriend. And now, every time my mates ask me to help troubleshoot them in Windows, I have to draw on my half remembered experiences and resort to going to Google, all while thinking "Why is Linux so much easier?" haha, I couldn't go back permanently since I've forgotten most of the tricks :p Different strokes for different folks

I have this customized Linux thing that fits on a 2GB key that I can take anywhere, it's neat and fast.

I kept XP for a while to play some strategy game but when I would use it, the boot time made me so mad I just had to delete it. :D

I understand that you might want Faildows for games or specialty programs, but otherwise, erggh.
Oooh, neat! I have a similar thing. I keep an ISO of Puppy Linux on my drive to use at the computer lab. I've been able to find 99% of the software I need (although, I run windows when a program isn't in a .deb package but has a .exe file and runs okay under Wine cos I'm lazy :p ) and I have my PS3/XBOX for gamin'

Knowing the Escapist, I'm willing to bet that most people are going to say Window XP.
Knowing the Escapist, I'm surprised there aren't more people running on hamster power.

I use mac, always had a mac. Even from the earliest computers, I had macintosh so I grew with it. This also means that I sucked hard at computer classes (well, not that much, but at first I was pretty baffled :D )

Windows 7. Like the clean interface and various shortcuts. I've tried OSX and just find it more frustrating than anything. Not a BAD OS, but I especially don't like the fact that I have to buy an expensive Mac computer to use it (and no I am not going to try the Hackintosh route)

Due to my air of sophistication and narcissism, is it not obvious that I am a Mac user?

In all honesty though, I do prefer Mac over other OS.

Win 7 64 bit, and I actually like it a lot. I find it far more intuitive that I expected, compared to XP.

Linux doesn't offer anything worthwhile to me, and there's more than enough freeware, customizability and open-source software on offer for windows to satisfy my non-gaming needs.

I avoid Apple like the plague.

Windows 7 for my gaming need, for everything else there is Linux.

Used to use Ubuntu but I have been running Linux Mint Debian for the last couple of weeks. And this evening, on a virtual machine, started messing about with Archlinux. Man that is one userunfriendly OS.
