Hello all,

For those who do not know a 2.5D game is a game with 3D environments and characters but you can only control that character up/down or left/right.

I would like your views on 2.5D games - a lot of XBLA games are starting to use them to make the graphics pretty and the physics easy. It allows developers to release games with interesting concepts, pretty design but most important simple and excellent gameplay.

I for one am a huge fan of 2.5D. Rocket riot & Splosion man. I like 2.5D games because by limiting the controls to 2D the gameplay can be faster paced and still enjoyable.

All in all the classic gameplay of sidescrolling combined with the prettyness of 3D

I'm kinda neutral on the concept.
Side note: I am very excited about a new 2.5D game that Nexon is going to release soon. :D

For example like my game?
It like it, it's a nice twist on 2d platformers we hardly see these days and forces people to think in puzzlicious ways.

Get Trine off Steam. Awesome little 2.5D game. Not very long, but it like a cross between Little Big Planet and Lost Vikings.

Would LittleBigPlanet be considered as 2.5D?

2.5D games are sometimes ok but i prefer full 2D or full 3D games.

Yes it would, although it does allow you to move through several planes so it's iffy. But I'm sticking with it is.

I like them.

But on the PC I haven't seen that many.

Not sure if Ys Oath in Felghana counts as 2.5D but that game is awesome. So is the next one and have yet to get the third.

I like 'em. Basic platformers using new graphics? Awesome. Especially because many 3D jump'n'run's controls are completely worthless.

I like them. Like Bionic Commando, or the side scrolling death match mod for UT3.

Don't forget though that 2.5D also refers to games like Age of Empires 2 and Rise of Nations, which are also fantastic games.

given that most RPGs are 2.5d (or effectivly 2.5d like mass effect, that does allow limited climbing) it would be crude to dismiss an entire design style :p. If you took a game like NWN and added a jump check, while more true to 3rd edition rules I know, it would lead to a LOT of bad gameplay issues...

That's not 2.5d, they allow you to move in more than 2 Dimensions.

Eh, I'm completely neutral to the idea. I can't really even think of any that I've played except maybe Phantom Hourglass...

I wouldnt consider RPG's 2D as you have can run diagonally i.e. off a 2D plane. Mass Effect allows your character 360 degree freedom etc.

Anything that uses a decimal point to describe gameplay is a no.

I'm racist against math.
Fuck you, math.
would you rather it be called 2D gameplay with 3DGraphics?

Im all about sticking it to the math but that was a little..harsh?
