Squall does not fit here. Just saying.
I'd say Squall is a Composed Realist with a bit of Atoner in him Judging by what i've seen and read. Havn't actually played Final Fantasy 8 (Can't find a copy where i live), so i could very well be wrong.
Well, frankly, I think the wonderful thing is that, though some types over-ride (Atoner and Realist, though "Realist" doesn't cover the "Tragic Douchebag" category), he actually has a pretty wide selection of a lot of these, even some of the bad ones (which is what makes him a good character.)
In order:
Rogue: Squall has a loose, but relatively strict moral and ethical philosophy which he tends to go by regardless of protocol or law. He does what feels right, and what is right.
Atoner: While he is less "Atoning" when being the hero and more being The Rookie (see below), he does fit here relatively well. There is a non-explicit, but totally valid read of Squall's personality and actions that would say that he often accepts his de-facto leadership appointments and hero role because he is a douchebag, which, as he eventually explains, has less to do with people and more to do with him.
Rookie: If you read over Squall's character history, you'll notice that, despite his apparently back-bonerific will, his roles in life, and how he got to where he is was not at all chosen by him, and damn near every time you do something with Squall in the game, it's his first time doing it. To be fair, however, he is trained and well prepared.
Fool: Squall is by no measure stupid, but if his situation was read by a professional psychologist, the shrink would probably reccomend that he get out for mental health reasons. He refuses to act upon his occasional desire to just up and leave his roles that fate has assigned to him, even though this might be best for him in the long run, mostly due to hsi blind alliegance to his independently determined moral system (see Rogue above). In addition, of course, despite what may seem like his outright pessimism, he is possibly the most determined protagonist in the series to see his tasks through to the end, despite thouroughly disliking it. (Which, frankly, has almost been reason enough for others to up and quit, see Squall, Zidane, Tidus almost . . .)
Veteran Adventurer: More in outlook than experience. Though his character development arc is all about this: He's been in deep relationships before, he's been hurt, he doesn't want it to happen again, thus his conflicts with everyone else.
Composed Realist: This outlook is what holds his leadership together.
The Impulsive Idiot: Ok, not so much, addmitedly.
Murderer: In personality rather than action. How did a dick like Squall get picked by the fates to lead?
What I just didn't see was the outright dickbag type, I mean, despite Squall being definitive for his particular archetype ("Unlikely hero working through serious issues", basically), you don't see his picture, Cloud's picture, Shadow, all sortsa guys.
