Just want to know what roles people fit themselves into. This does not just have to be for FPS, as you can quite easily squeeze into the format of a sniper in an MMO or a strategy game as well.

I enjoy the skill and tactics involved in sniper play, especially on a server with other skilled snipers. Though I do enjoy a bit of grunt play from time to time, especially when bayonets are involved.

A mix between suicidal rusher and frontliner, I never liked sniping or some of the support classes, I tend to tank up and go look for things to kill.

Suicidal and frontliner. But usually it's:

1. Empty long-range weapons.
2. Get a close combat weapons.
3. Charge at the enemy, best if from behind.
4. Look at the enemy's words saying "STOP THAT INSANE MORON, HE WILL KILL US!"
5. Gloat.

This is me as well, at least in FPSs. I prefer to get in close and fight it out at min range. I'm ranged DPS in MMOs and tabletop RPGs-- if there's a mage-type class, I'll play it.

What does "sneaky son of a *****" classify as? Ah, well, I'll go with mixed.(What does that classify under, anyway?)

I like to take a support role. In Team Fortress 2 for instance my most played class is Engineer, follow by Medic. In Gears of War 2 I try to stick with my teammates and revive them as much as possible. I actually help my a team a lot by playing that way, because I'm usually (especially in GoW2) the only one who plays that way, so it really adds something.

Mixed means you change your style based on the current game/map/round.

Does anyone actually play for the team instead of themselves?

I'm not bad at being a sniper, I like to scout a bit (sniper and scout are often the same), and they can serve as good support too. But I have to vote Suicidal Rusher. I just love to enter battle in a rage, spraying bullets or other deadly stuff around, terrifying the confused and stunned enemy and taking out a few of them in a glorious sacrifice for my team.

Edit: just noticed the mixed option, and since I often have suicidal (though not often entirely useless) tendencies as a sniper, I guess I'm a mixed player instead, though I already voted..

1. Welcome to the escapist, you'll enjoy it here.
2. I usually prefer machine guns. In MGO i used the sniper rifle a lot. But in genral, i suck at online FPS's. I still wanna get killzone 2 though.

Depends on what I'm playing but...

In FPS I'm nearly always that suicidal moron sprinting in with a knife/pistol combo (nearly always ends up the winner too boot =D)
In RTS I always focus entirely on defense/support, often ending up winning by default because my opponents quits out of frustration/boredom.
and it's just a combination of the 2 in other genres, so I won't bother bringing those up.

Ranged DPS. Yes, I play MMOs. Piss off. I like being a glass cannon.
Excuse my ignorance but what's a glass cannon? I don't play MMOs at all.

I chose mixed because it depends on my surroundings, the level of difficulty, the game and if I'm playing on a team or solo. Generally, if I'm playing co-op with my friend who's a Suicidal Rusher, I take the role of a sniper. I like being the "invisible ally" to the guy surrounded by enemies.

Definitely a suicidal rusher. I know it's stupid, I know it usually doesn't work, but it's what I do anyway.

The first time I played MGS it took me about 20 tries to get into the elevator at the start.
