Normal first, i expect the developers to put the right kind of balance in a game at its regular difficulty, if i like a game enough ill do hard, usually not expert.

I go hard I like a challenge in my game and I love story so those options don't work for me, this is why you don't need polls... but people don't seem to grasp that...

for fps i go for hard - im pretty good at them. rpgs i go normal - im decent but not great. rts' im horrible. so i go easy, if possible i go for super easy.

if i really love the game though ill replay it on a harder mode. so far the only ones ive done that on are mass effect, mirrors edge and half life 2.

When it comes to games I want to experience a unique and exciting world in which I can become immersed. A challenge is good, but when I die every ten seconds I get unimmersed very quickly.

I go regular or hard first. I like to play the game and have fun with it before being reduced to yelling at my screen and rage quitting.

I'd have to say expert in that I play games to do something different and to think about something else for a bit and to unwind and especially to play a good puzzle game. All so damn good.

So not really always involving killing things... but if there is some kind of story, I give it a shot most of the time

Expert when i'm playing with myself..but I prefer to play with others.

Where's the 'Expert, but I'm here for story, too' elements? I'll play games on the hardest difficulty, but I won't skip the story. Heck, some RPGs never give you the option and just fling you into expert whether you like it or not.

I also enjoy multiplayer where I can find it.

Why do you not include me?

I shift. The first play through is a test play through to see if the game is good (easiest setting to take out the fact that I may be terrible at it) and see if the story is interesting. If I play it another time through then I put the difficulty to either a high or the highest setting and skip the story.

Regular to hard. I like challenge in my games. Unless it's NG2, which i went on easy.

Just to quote myself:...

I did stereotype a bit, sorry. A few people have made similar points. If it makes it easier, consider the hard option to include the hardest difficulty setting but with plot still as a main focus, whereas choosing expert means the plot and pacing for you take a backseat to the challenge presented.
Hope you no longer feel left out.

I always start on regular, mostly because I don't want to bust my ass going through a game that I might not like that much. If I enjoyed playing the game on regular, then I playthrough again on hard and maybe expert.

I've honestly been trying to cut down on Easy/Very Easy settings. Not exactly a challenge-less task in itself, what with games having too many extreme deviations between said difficulty levels.

I usually finish games on regular first just to get a feel for the levels, then on my second play through I'll bump it up to the second hardest or hardest difficulty. Once I've finished with the single player multiplayer takes over till I stop playing the game.

I like a balance between story and gameplay or else one side becomes tedious, unless of course something dousen't call for one like space invaders versus grim fandango.

Regular to Hard, But occasionally I have done expert. But mainly for the sole purpose of getting more achievements. Just because I'm a whore like that.

Normal, I play a game for its fun factor but I invest a lot of interest in the story. I might feel a detraction from that interest if I feel the urge to destroy my 360 coming on.
