I dont like many RTS's because on the fly micromanagement just isnt my thing. Neither is having to destroy an enemies base from its fortified position. That might be why I like Dawn of war 2 so much. Its my favorite RTS because its squad based domination which relies more on map control and squad use rather then building a bunch of bases and excessive micromanagement.

As to the poll, I guess neither fits my style of RTS
I must admit that I never played much of the medival warfare RTS were you manage armies with positions and flanking and the like. I much prefered Scifi Settings because of the emphasis on long range weapons and artillery.
Therefore I lack any insight into those kind of games and forgot about this dimension(squad based combat) in the design focus.

CIV is a turn based strategy game.
For an example of a Real Time Strategy game think about Age of Empire.

I was a big fan of Dark Reign because you had unit behavior options that let the tanks and dudes do some of their own micro-management. You could also set the default behavior of units produced from the various factories, so you could queue up a pile of tanks that would cruise around and harass the enemy and then head back for repairs when they were down to x% health.

Oh man... Total Annihilation for $2,39 on GOG right now.
Please just buy it even if you own it on cd already.
The increased compability, bugfixes and the mods make it so worth it.

Edit:
Missed your chance, still worth it at 4.99$.

I'm going to toss in a bit of an absurd third option; my favorite part of an RTS is building my base, researching new unit upgrades, etc. When it comes time for combat, I just chuck a ball of whatever's most expensive at the enemy. I'd like an RTS where I can just plan and build my city, walls, towers, farms, what have you... and let someone else control the fighting. I mean, does the King personally go and command every single unit in a war?

Let me hire some generals, each with different AI and abilities, and just give vague orders like, "Conquer this city," or "Take that hill," or "Hold these mines," and then focus on running my realm. Like a Fantasy Sim City where there's a war related minigame going on at the other end of the map.
What you really want is a city builder, like Pharaoh or Stronghold Crusader. Sadly this genre is a bit out of fashion right now. Something might turn up on the Indie\Kickstarter circuit eventually.

Seeing as how I've been an RTS/RTT fanboy for years, I used to lean more towards macro style gameplay during my earlier PC gaming years, with the Command and Conquer series, although Warcraft 2 was really where I actually started getting into Real Time Strategy. Although now I love both macro-management and micromanagement play styles roughly equally now. Company of Heroes is an almost perfect blend of the 2 play styles since you're only having to deal with the base building aspect for a short time, and most of the time, actually focusing on the combat.

I only started getting into the Total War series with Empire, seeing as how I sort of dismissed the series due to being kind of irked at the naming convention years earlier. although I found the gameplay much to my liking, even if it did start slowing my computer to a crawl around 1770 in Empire. I've had some epic moments in the games where I managed to pull victory from the jaws of defeat due to skillful tactics.

I never was quite as big on Starcraft as a lot of other people where, although I did really like Warcraft III. I could go on and on, about my interest in Real Time Strategy/Tactics, although it would be a pretty long list.

I like War/Star craft style of RTSs if I had that kind of combat in deep RTS's like Elemental or stronghold or CIV I think I would at least try to play those RTSs more.

I've been a massive RTS fan for years with the first C&C being the starting game that brought me into the RTS world.

I'll start with saying that I tend to prefer the Total Annihilation style/AOE style of gameplay, the masses of units waging war on the battlefield can become a beautiful specticle to watch.

Though I do play Starcraft and Starcraft 2 I will not play them vs human opponents due to needing such high APM and viable strats that fit well within the community and are not considered "cheesing", that and I don't like the small paced gameplay it brings when it comes to going against another human and how short the battles can become.

I'd also like to point out that Planetary Annihilation should have it's full release during this month and while I've only just been given the game a week ago the gameplay is good but will need more fine tuning and optimization, but the game is totally worth checking out if you want a new RTS game to play.
