Hello Escapist,

With this semester coming to a close, I've been thinking a lot about my grades and how much they matter in the long run. I was wondering what your opinions are on the matter and where you fall on the (incredibly general) scale of poll options. Feel free to post why you feel your grades are how they are in comment form.

On my end, I've pretty consistently been in the 4.0 range throughout my education. I try just hard enough to do well and be viewed as a "good" student by the faculty. As far as real-world work related to my field goes, I exert considerably more effort.

RE-EDIT: It seems as if the poll options have decided to join us.

ADDITIONAL EDIT: It appears as though my squishy American brain has neglected to realize that other countries use a different grading rubric. For those of you who are unaware, 4.0 is the best you can do and the scale (logically) descends from there.

Uh. I do pretty well when I can tolerate actually doing the work. My average grades are pretty abysmal though because half the time I don't do an assignment or bail on a test. I am very unenthusiastic about school, cripplingly so.

Oh dear i cant see the poll options, anyway it depends on the kind of program and your goal.
If your depending on getting into a masters or some secondary degree for your job your marks in the first degree especially the last two years matter a lot. If your in a professional program all you need to do is meet the passing requirements and your golden.

As far as GPA concerned i have been rocking along at a solid but not exceptional sounding 2.7 range. Funny enough this unimpressive GPA had me top of my rather small program before I switched universities due to a monopoly agreement between several universities in Nova Scotia.

Edit the poll showed up after i posted this and the thread reloaded

I had a perfect 4.0 GPA when I attended college. Technically, I had an average score of over 100 but they don't really take that into account for GPA calculations.

College was a lot more enjoyable than highschool for me.

I'm more of a 3.5 - 4.0 kinda guy. Smart enough to get by without really trying.

And right now I'm really not trying. It's the end of the year, I'm pretty tired of working every night, so I basically leave as much as I can to do in school itself. I procrastinate, but I don't just not do my work. It always gets done somehow, and when it is, it's a B or higher.

So yeah. Around 4.0

I didn't apply myself in college, so I ended up doing just enough to keep my scholarships. I think I left with something like a 2.90 . I did enough to get my BA in 4 and a half years, that's all I was ever hoping for.

I could have done better if I hadn't been working 2 jobs and chasing skirts the entire time.

Yeah you Midlanders can keep your rats arse of a curriculum.

Standard Grade and Highers keep it real in Scotland.

Meanwhile, in Britain... where I am.

What is this I don't even.
I am also from that particular island, and I don't understand.

Do they score their pupils out of 4? Do they have some kind of Simon Cowell-esque judge who they bring the pupil before and get him to assign them a score?

I'm a really bad student. I pretty much don't revise or study until I feel that I really have to, but I am still on a decent grade (2nd from best in the UK system) so I don't mind too much.

Maybe I should actually start working though... hmm...

American Grading scale.

A = 4.0 Great
B = 3.0 A Bit Above Average
C = 2.0 A Bit Below Average
D = 1.0 You Suck
F = 0.0 You Done F**ked Up

- or + grades are .3 points in either direction I believe.

3.5ish, which is pretty good at my school since they don't weight averages and I'm taking all AP classes.

Scotland has the most real of all the educational systems, and it does, indeed, keep it. Although all the SQA invigilators look so old they should be fossils or middle-aged and depressed.

I am in my first year and my grades have consistently been in the 2:1 area. The only reason for this being that your first year grades don't count towards your degree.
