After I finished the new X-com I must say I liked the ending. Not something Epic or Awesome, but satisfying for me at least.
But then I search some Forums and oh boy the hate...THE HATE for the ending once again!!!
What the heck with the ending people? If you like the game, then the ending is only a minor problem. Also why you though X-com ending was bad?

Anyway, after saw this, I decided to create this Thread to ask you What Kind of Videogame Ending do you want to see to be satisfied

-A Normal ending. No long, no short, explaining some things to the end.

-A "Twist" ending. It seems the story had end, only few seconds later in the cinematic, something happened that it is very obvious a set up for a sequel or raise more questions.

-A Detailed ending. Long explanation what happen to everything you saw and experienced in the game.

-An "Episodic" ending. A closer for the game you play, but not for the story you play with many question still unanswer.

-A "Let me explore" ending. The ending it is in form of exploration. You explore different places and people to see what happened to them after your adventure.

-A Short ending. Just to see something nice to the end cause in reality I learned everything I wanted while I was playing.

-A "No real" ending. After you finished the game you can continue playing more.

Please vote in the poll I have and tell us the reason why.

For me is the "Let me explore" ending.
I think it is very rare, but to go around and ask the characters what happened to them after the end of your story is something extraordinary.

EDIT:
Yeah...I must fix the poll....wait a moment please.

A detailed ending for me . I love seein what happened to every and how everything was effected by what you did in the game . But this only applies to rpgs . Because i play rpgs for story .

Everything else give me a short ending . Because i don't really care . I just want some finality . As long as it's more than ( congratulation you best the game ).

One ending that disappointed me was Dark souls . I mean the ending cinematic was like 12 seconds long . Sure the ending made you understand stuff , if you bothered to look for the story in the game , but still. In my opinion they should have at least done like the opening cinematic , which was short but put things into percepective.

A "let me explore" ending sounds really good, but I've never come across it in any game I've played. Either Fallout 3 or New Vegas would've worked really well with that kin of ending, but alas, the opted not to have that sort of ending.
Can someone list a few games that actually let you "explore" the world after you've completed the game?

A very good example without giving so much about the plot, is in Persona 4. After you done with the main story of the game, you have the ability to see what happened to the town you live in before end your game.

Depends on the game, though detailed seems to work for the most part.

Some twists are amazing, while others are convoluted attempts to add depth.

I don't mind some ambiguity in an ending, leaving things open to interpretation is fine as long as you do it right. That being said, it is nice for closure and all when you get to find out whether everyone lived happily every after or burned in hell. Either way, at least you know. A twist for the sake of a twist always ends in failure. Do it right and it's probably the best of the lot.

Depends on the game. For RPGs, I like a detailed ending that explains the effects of all my actions over the course of the game. For a more linear game, I just want something short and satisfying that wraps up the story, with no long explanations or monologues needed because I should have gotten all the important story points from playing the game. Episodic endings are the worst (except in cases of genuine episodic games, like all the Telltale adventure games), because every game story should be complete within itself and have a satisfying ending, even if there are going to be sequels.

Also, while the "let me explore" ending sounds cool on paper, it's not really practical for games that are supposed to have lots of choices and consequences, like RPGs. The budgets of modern AAA games are already bloated enough without having to add in extra content to show all the different outcomes of all the different possible choices the player could have made over the course of the game, so you either sacrifice the after-game exploring or cut out a lot of the choice, and I'd rather have the choices. It works perfectly for regular sandbox games like GTA or Saints Row, however.

Also I want to add Infamous Ending also.
No a big spoiler, but after your choices you make in the game, you can see what happened once again in your town you live in.
I really liked that also :)

The Elder Scrolls games of course, but the only guards really acknowledge it. Borderlands as well, but there's not much to do after you beat the game besides Playthrough 2, so it's more of a "no real ending.".

Paper Mario games actually do it extraordinarily well, almost every character's dialogue changes after you beat the game and several new interactions open up. You can even go back and talk to certain bosses after you beat them. I haven't seen a game that does it better than the Paper Mario series, particularly Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door.

OT: "Let me explore" endings are my favorite. I hate saving the world and either no one acknowledges it or the game just tells me to do it again.

Oh I hate the endings that have no real endings. Like pretty much every sandbox game ever. It leaves you with no sense of closure and the game has ended story-wise but things are just still... Happening. For some reason. Hmm. It just feels empty

Right, time to surprise everyone by saying that Persona 4 has (along with being the baist gaem evar anyway but that's besides the point) the best ever ending to a video game. So good.

I'm not discussing P4's ending at all here. Anyone who hasn't played it would get spoiled and that's heartbreaking.

Ok, i'll spoiler it but please do not open this spoiler unless you're 10000% certain you will never, never, ever, ever play Persona 4 in your life. Even if you don't like JRPGs in general Persona 4 transcends genre because it's just that good so play it you numpty.

No, actually it's too awesome and complex to put into words effectively. Play Persona 4 nao

Right I ain't answered the question yet. I suppose a detailed ending like the one in New Vegas or a twist one if the twist is actually good and isn't a whorish cliffhanger.

A really good ending would involve multiple parts of your poll in the one same ending scene/section. Like Persona 4

I dont care as long as the ending they choose feels good and solid and fits the game well, it dosent have to be a specific type a good ending will just make sense for the game they have made.

Well if you really dont like JRPGS you will not like Persona 4 or 3 if you have a strong dislike for text heavy games you will also dislike Persona 4 and 3 the uneven difficulty especially at the start will also put some off and the poor graphics (by todays standard back in the day they were ok) may also turn people off if that is important to them. Basically its a visual novel crossed with a JRPG and Persona 4 Arena is a visual novel crossed with a fighting game.

I loved Persona 4 and 3 though and thought the ending in both were very good although I was ready for the twist in Persona 4 after 3 as they set it up very similar just throw this random story out halfway through for seemingly no reason yeah I didnt pay attention in P3 but when it happened again in P4 you know thats what everything will come back to and it did, the way they handled the main story though was much better I didnt figure out who that was until much later. Im not sure what the canon ending is though guessing by the anime and Arena (from what I have seen as its not out here yet) its the standard non twist good ending.

Both Persona 4 and 3 were very satisfying for me overall in the story department.

More ending hate? When will gamers learn :3?

To answer your question my favorite endings are the ones that have closure and leave room for interpretation. Now the first part is so that I'm not waiting for a sequel that never comes and the second is because I decide what happens based on what I think would be correct. It's also fun to debate whether character x did thing y after the game ends. Also these sort of endings make it seem like they actually spent more than 10 minutes writing the ending and cared about the story.

Well, in ME1&2 you could "explore" after beating the game, which they made fun by making the npc's to actually think about what happened and comment on it. And in addition to the fun; all the dlc that was meant as a bridge between those games, as in "Lair of the Shadow Broker" and that ME1 dlc with batarians.

I personally like a detailed ending, and imo that "explorable" ending fits in that category as well, since you get to see what happened and feel like your actions affect things even after "beating" the game. That's what I like, feeling "I made this happen. Damn, I'm good." and knowing that things you actually did and decided on made you get to this point.

The one that makes sense. Sometimes a twist is great. Sometimes a detailed ending is great. Sometimes it's "to be continued" or it's like Inception where you get to choose what to believe in. I don't have a favorite. As long as it makes sense.

It depends on the game. Beyond Good and Evil's ending was great, and it was very much a twist ending. Whereas in RPGs like Dragon Age or the Witcher, I love the 'detailed' or 'let me explore' endings they usually have, seeing the impact you've had on the world. And for example the ending of Shadow of the Colossus, I'm not sure where it would even fit into this, but it's kind of symbolic rather than detailed or anything, and I loved that too. So, I don't know, depends on the game. Let me explore is probably my favourite though.
