It has to be HARD but worthwhile. Aka not how the halo 2 snipers would insta-gib you if you didnt memorize every single spot they spawned and headshot them in 1sec before they kill you. Hard as in you must develop strats and have good skills in multiple areas to win.

I classed a hardcore game as one thats really good, as well as something that you can spend a ridiculous amount of hours on. SO basically heavily focused multiplayers like CS:S, Halo 3 and MMOs fall into this - to me. You can spend ages on them and not get anywhere.

Well, seeing as the first word in "hardcore" is "hard" I'm going with difficulty. Portal is a very good game, but I really wouldn't call it "hardcore" in fact its core is quite soft, but in a delicious, gummy sort of way.

MW2, on the other hand, can get quite hard and is usually the game mentioned when someone says "hardcore", and while its core is like steel, but that doesn't mean it's a good game (my opinion).

So the hardness of a game's core is ultimately based on difficulty, in my opinion.

Ok, how about a definition that suits all of yours?

I would say that a hardcore game is a game that people can be devoted too. They're willing to waste time and effort to get better at their respective games.

There, now you have something that fits the multiplayer of today and the whole platforming with the Nintendo death cycle.

A game is "hardcore" when most of the people playing it are playing to win, not to have fun.

For a game to be hardcore, it has to require your commitment. That's not exactly the same thing as saying it has to be difficult though that's the option I voted for.

Also, the idea that quality makes a game hardcore does not sit well with me. I see no contradiction in the idea of a high quality casual game. Why would there be one?

lets turn to the dictionary

"Hardcore:
pruriently explicit; graphically depicted"

-Mario is not hardcore due to his family friendly nature and setting
-Masterchief is considered hardcore because fighting in a large scale war is considered a more mature setting.

There is no such thing as a hardcore game. "Hardcore" defines gamers, not games.

What Hardcore 'should' mean:
Difficulty, large devotion of time, large quantity of effort, etc

What Hardcore generally (And unfortunately) means:
Games almost devoid of color, riding the realism train, usually containing muscle-clad douche-bags that may or may not be wearing space armor. Primarily marketed for a particular demographic.

(Pat on the head if you know who I am (badly) quoting)
