You need both. Take for example Hip Hop. These days there is a lot Hip Hop has great beat, but the vocals are trash. The same can go for any kind of music.
you can have one or the other..without the other.and it can still be music. also keeping in mind. that someones voice, especially when singing.is already and instrument. not all instruments have to be made of metal or wood. that's is at least my point of view.
I have to agree with Machines you sing songs but you play music besides the vocals are really just another instrument to be perfectly honest your still doing something at a certain a pitch and the words are like your rythm so...Machines Are Us said:
Your definition of "music" could use some work. As said above, songs (instruments + sung lyrics) are music, but not all music can be classified as a song. Harmony, melody, rhythm, etc. are all parts of what makes music, but they are not music in and of themselves.
Music is audible art and completely subjective. You cannot base the merit of music on whether or not is has any of the aforementioned aspects (unless you're one of those music snobs). Your experience with the music is what makes music great (to you): the emotions it makes you feel, the power of the vocalist or the other musicians.
Summarily, music is a relative thing and it's good if you truly enjoyed it for the music's sake. End of story.

So a person talking is good music? Lyrics are the words to a song with vocals. Vocals can't make music because there are instrumental peices, and instrumentals can't do the same because there is a capella.txgamer86 said:
The thing that makes a song for me is the flow. A song is only good if it stays with itself. Everything should be in key, everything should be in time, and everyting should be able to sound good. Abnormality, a metal band up-the-ass, does all of this (seriously) except for the sounding good for most people. Wihtout flow, there isn't a song.
You can make music either way. Someone can just be standing there singing and it would be still considered music, so I'll say both
Music doesn't require harmony or even a tonal structure. The only thing that sets music apart from other noises is rhythm. Look at African Drumming, it doesn't have a defined melody or harmony but it has rhythm and that's all you need.
To be honest, as a musician, the concept of this thread was kind of insulting. You can't break music down into instruments and vocals. To do so is ignorant and requires a major music lesson.
