If I really want a game, I'll pay full price for it. I generally pre-order the games I really want to play.

Any games I get at a dropped price, they are usually lower on my list and I just don't get around to buying them near the release date.

I lately find out about a game that came out awhile ago and check it out e.g. reviews, vids. and if I like it then I buy it providing I have the money and if not then I wait til I have the money.

An example of this would be that I just got disgaea2:dark hero days after Seeing a review for the newest spinoff Disgaea:infinity which got me interested about the rest of the series so I found out about the main games, read so reviews, watched some videos and decided that I liked it so bought it and I should get it in the post tomorrow morning yay!

But also sometimes I just get a new game because I've been following it since they announced it e.g. I want fallout NV and bulletstrom currently.

so on topic I only but full price if I really want it. otherwise it can wait.

In more detail...What makes me buy a game at full price at all?

If it has 'Valve', 'Blizzard' or 'Bioware' stamped on it somewhere...or if it's a game I worked on (sound design). Maybe someday my dream of having both of those be relevant to the same game will come true.

Otherwise, without fail, I will wait until a game I find interesting is lower in price...via steam or on sale at best buy. My boyfriend, however, works at best buy and thus comes home with random crap all the time, but at least he gets the discount.

Last game I purchased at full price was a venture into mostly unknown territory. I asked for advice from some locals I knew, and plunged in.

I very rarely buy games at full price, to the point where I can't even remember when I last bought a game at full price. I didn't even buy Heavy Rain at full price and I bought that 2 days after it initially came out, but I always know what game I want and will go out and purchase it. I don't impulse buy games too often, unless they are preowned or in the sale and are cheap.

I will pay up to $40 for a game that I know that I will enjoy, but does not have the words "half-life" in the title. Frankly, Valve could bend me over pretty much any table they like, price-wise, and I'd eat it up.

Otherwise, $40 is the absolute max. I don't think I've spent more than $40 in years, and even that level is really, uncommonly high.

your options are kind of limiting, since I and Im sure others follow a game after discovering it till release do abit of research(user reviews, hands ons, previews) then go buy them on or shortly after launch day

If I want to buy a certain game, I'll buy it on release at full price. But often I go into stores just to browse and buy stuff I think'll be good.

I bought Red Dead Redemption on a whim.

I'd enjoyed Red Dead Revolver on the PS2, and I was aware of the existence of Red Dead Redemption, but I wasn't hyped about it or really intended to get it, but then I read some positive reviews and more importantly, positive feedback & opinions about it on forums when it was released in America.

I then realised that I still had 2 days to preorder it for a discounted price & preorder bonus, so I logged into my favourite online retailer, clicked the mouse a few time and had it preordered & delivered to my house 2 days later.

It was the best impulse buy I've made in a long time, and a positive advantage to games getting released a few days earlier in the US than the UK.

EDIT: I think you need a poll option for people who preorder or order their games online, because I wouldn't have bought this one if I have had to make the long journey to my nearest game shop.

My last one was Nier and I really wasn't planning on buying it at full price. I really wanted it but I have so many games I still need to play that it seemed silly to dish out $60 just to have it sit around for a while. (I have bought games full price, though.)
But I ended up going to buy it anyway, because I had a $30 off coupon for Best Buy and I wanted to use it before it expired. So, I bought it while it was full price but got it for half price.

Er...not sure what you want to call that for your poll options there.

Most recently I actually preordered (I never pre-order) Just Cause 2 because I loved the demo and I wanted the hovercraft.

But even more recently I picked up Red Dead Redemption but only because it was a launch day special at TRU for $35. Otherwise I probably would've just rented it.

I also like to try a demo or rental before I buy. The next game that I'll buy without trying a demo or rental will probably be Fallout Vegas, but my wife and I are big fans of Fallout 3 so that will probably be another pre-order, just to get extra content. We're trying to decide which one - she's leaning towards Caravan, I'm leaning towards Mercenary.

I can tell you what makes me not want to buy a game.
"Cool its like cops and robbers in a video game, who made this genius known as APB... EA! CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP! *Slams head into desk*

Repeat for Sega/Obsidian if i see any of these tags it puts me off a game 99% of the time unless i really wanted it/knew it wouldn't be fucked up

Is it made by Bioware? If so I will either get it on relaease or when I don't have a slew of work. Otherwise I'll definetely wait a while and check it's good before i buy, I only have faith in the mighty Bioware any more.
100% my reasoning. TOR so far away...
Curse you for reminding me of the one exceptin to this rule. I refuse to have anything to do with MMOs, not even the might of Bioware can change that. I died a little inside when i found out they were making one.
Nothing wrong with mmo's done well.
Wish they'r just made KOTOR3.
I have to agree with that though.
Been on the TOR website? Even if you never plan on going in for TOR I think you should really look at the website. Gnost Dural's archive is well worth it (though I am just a hog for all that bioware background/codex stuff).

The two cgi trailers are also better than all the starwars movies combined = P

Yes indeed. That is what happens when you don't let George Lucas through the front door.

Before I ever make any game purchase I generally give it a lot of thought and research, seeing as I don't want to waste my time and money with a game I'll hate. Things I mainly look at are

1. Genre (RPG, FPS, RTS or a combination of those three)

2. Reviews (I always at least look at PC Gamer's review as they usually do the most in-depth coverage when it comes to PC gaming; however I might also consider IGN.com and rarely XPlay).

3. Franchise or Developer (Usually the last reason I'll buy a game but if it's a certain franchise or Dev that I've known to have great games in the past such as Bioware or Valve then I'll be much more likely to buy it).

After going through that checklist as long as I can afford it I'll buy the game.
