I like a story that fits in a games setting and backs up why you are playing

Pretty much everything...but mostly it has to be fun an interesting.

Graphics and story.

I want a game to look shiny and awesome, so it keeps me watching to pick up the story, and not looking away in disgust.

Final Fantasy 10 did this brilliantly.

Story and characters, though, those usually go hand in hand for me. If I like the characters, I'll care about the story the characters are in. If I like the story, I like the characters (I've even had it that I've liked the story simply because I liked the characters, even if the story on its own is a sucky idea). Yeah, weird but...meh. xD

Story. I'm a bookworm, so I love literary elements (character development, foreshadowing, motifs, etc.), particularly when their brought to life in games.
