Windows 7 Home Premium on my desktop - Because I tried Windows 7 and quite liked it, over Vista at any rate.

Windows XP on my Netbook - Windows best since 98.

I tried Ubuntu a couple of times, but it just isn't my cup of tea.
Seconded. Ubuntu sounds great and has some unique features, but it's just too incompatible for my liking.
I have it as a fallback for my PC. Ubuntu has become so stupidly easy to install (you can even install it by launching a program from within Windows 7, it takes like 15 minutes) that despite not recognizing my graphics card and doing most of the usual Linux stupidity when it comes to hardware it still didn't make sense to not keep it in there in case I need some quick recovery in an emergency.

But yeah, Windows 7 is the way to go right now. I completely skipped Vista, but W7 does so many cool things with the interface while still being reasonably fast that I can forgive the dumb, dumb "say yes to everything" approach of Windows to security.
Yeah I know what you mean. Windows is obviously very sorry about everything because now it has to ask your permission before it does anything even slightly risky.

Or perhaps it has just grown even more condescending. "What's that? You want to install a program? Well now, are you sure about that? You know what happened last time don't you? Yeah, well, we don't want that kind of thing happening again do we? Yes, that's right, just click the cancel button and we can go back to living our relitively safe and boring lives."

Thanks windows Vista/7, thanks for really helping me out there!

I use XP at the moment, less buggy than Windows Vista, but I haven't the money for Windows 7 yet. I'm probably just going to build a new computer and get it then.

Otherwise I use a combination of Ubuntu and XP on my laptop.

Vista 32-bit. But only because when I got my PC it was actually slightly cheaper to get it with Vista pre-installed than it was to get it with XP pre-installed. Go figure. I've not really had many problems with it though. That said, when the time comes to by a new PC (I'm currently planning on saving for a laptop for when I go to university), I'll definitely be getting one with Windows 7 on it.

You guys should try a real linux distro like Arch or Gentoo.
What do they do that Ubuntu doesn't? I may well stick one on my PC but for my netbook I like having the software library to download from.
If you are just staring to use Linux I'd go with Linux Mint over Ubuntu it's smal and has no bloat so it's perfect for a netbook.

XP Pro (32-bit), because I'm too poor to buy the 6Gb of registered ECC RAM and a copy of windows 7 64bit that would turn this rig into a gaming rig.

Windows 7 64 bit, because of exactly what the OP said.

Also because I got it for half price.

With a free solid state drive.

Win 7 Professional 64 bit ... well ... got it freely from the college network, so might as well put it to good use. :)

For gaming I use Windows. XP or 7 depending on wich PC I'm on.
For (almost) anything else: Ubuntu, openSUSE or Fedora, again depending on wich computer I use.
All 64bit.

XP Pro. It works.

Though my Socket 478 Pentium 4 has 98 on it. Still use it a bit, mostly for banking. Because 98 smokes on a P4.
