Poll: What percentage of games that you purchase are brand new, $60 titles?

So... I buy a lot of older games, partly because I tend to miss a lot of games because I don't have a lot of money, and partly because I am incredibly thrifty (why get 1 good game for $60 when I can get 4 older ones that are just as good for the same price?). I rarely buy brand new games. When I do, it is usually a title I have been really excited about (and even that is not a guarantee that I will buy it brand new). But, reading forums and stuff, it seems I might be in a minority here. So, I decided to make a poll to find out if my suspicions are correct!

So, this is my question: about what percentage of your games do you buy brand new for $60 (or whatever it is in your country)? No need to be exact, a rough estimate is fine. Also, bonus discussion question! Why do you buy what you do? If you buy a lot of older titles, why? If newer titles, why?

I have such a massive backlog from all of Steam's sales that it just seems unnecessary to buy most games brand-new. The games I tend to buy at launch are multiplayer titles that I have an interest in playing with other people, or something that looks seriously amazing/ I've been anticipating.

The only games I've bought at release in the last year are Skyrim, having been a massive Oblivion fan, and Borderlands 2 (mix of it looked awesome and keeping up with levels for any co-op play). I'm tempted by quite a few of the Winter releases this year though... Halo 4, will you let me down if I pre-order you?

Hmm honestly , about 20%. Mostly because i have catching up to do , and rarely does a game impress me enough to buy it day one . This year i bought FFXIII-2 on release ,and person 4 Arena . Huh i really thought it was more than that this year . Okay then so many less than 20% , more like 7% lol . I buy about 15 -20 games a year . Mostly older title . I like Jrpgs so ps2 is where i buy most my games , there are the odd current gen title i'll buy when i'm feeling for something more recent but it's not a priority , i usually go for older games forst since they soon become harder to find .

Okay so I just had a count of my game purchases this year and only one of them (Mass Effect 3) I got near launch for full price. I have to really want to play and game to justify the price at release.

I have some older games (3-4 years old) that i purchased brand new but honestly i don't buy games at all anymore. 40 quid for something that will last me 8-12 hours is just terrible value for money. Even pre-owned games at 10 quid aren't worth it anymore...i just rent 4 games a month for 10 quid and borrow anything my friends pick up on a whim. I could be tempted with a game like GTA because i know i will play it for 100 hours+ but pretty much anything else is a waste of my cash.

Thinking about my circle of friends i don't know anyone who buys anything other than the yearly sports games brand new...i think we have all realised there is nothing worth paying for anymore. The exception to this would be the odd PC friend i have who will pirate far more than they pay for...and only pay for games they've already pirated.

I am probably around 50/50. I have certain games I know I will be buying at $60 on release. Usually, if I wait to see how a game is recieved, I end up buying it used. On rare occasions if the game gets glowing feedback, I may pick it up at full price. For example, I am waiting to see how Dishonored is received and read a bit about the gameplay. It may end up being one I buy used in a year or so, or I may buy it full price in a month or two. Most of the time I know right off the bat where I stand.

I hardly ever buy games when they first come out.

I buy games that I know I need to play like, right now. I have Assassin's Creed 3 pre-ordered. But that's because I know the quality of the game will be worth buying it new, and I cant wait around now knowing what the hell happened with the story.

I purchase games that peak my interest at launch, or closely there after for the 60$ price tag. There are other games which I am kind of interested in which will get bought for less. A prime example, I am picking up Assassin's Creed III on launch, but grabbing Darksiders II when a bit later

Fallout: NV, Kingdoms of Lamalamalur and Crysis 2 are the last three big name games I remember buying for full price at launch.

Other than that I get most of my big name games during Steam sales as most of them aren't interesting enough to be worth the full price for me.

"I buy mostly old(er) titles." - but not really. I rarely pay full price for a game, if it is old or not, since PC games go on sale all the time. Back when D2D had coupon codes, I preordered Rage, Red Faction: Armageddon, Brink, and I think a few other games for 15-20% off. Recently, I traded someone on Steam $55 worth of games for Call of Duty Black Ops II preorder + Borderlands 2 Season Pass. Now, the only games I actually pay full price for are the games I'm going to play the second they come out, and then only if they are not cheaper somewhere else.

Technically speaking, only about 25% of the games I buy are $60, new games. However, that's not because I buy used games, but because I've been buying a lot of digital download, arcade-style games that don't cost me $60.

I tend to buy games I want as and when they come out. When none are coming out I tend to look through games I didn't buy before and try and older game out if there are any I like the look of.

I'm Australian, so when you say $60 we're talking about $100-$130 here (even though our dollar is actually worth more than the US dollar and has been for years - /rant).

I probably buy one, maybe two games a year at that price point. Pretty much everything else I'm happy to wait for the price drop because I have so little time to actually play games these days that it takes me a long time to get around to them. Assassins Creed: Revelations and Deus Ex - HR are still sitting unplayed on the shelf, for example.

Percentage here means nothing for me as it is skewed by Steam sales and the like. I still buy more or less the same number of new games as I used to.

I have bought 20+ games this year, mostly Steam sales and indie bundles.

I usually rent first so I rarely play games when they come out.
Occasionally there's a game that I'll be looking forward to enough that it'll warrant a day 1 purchase or even a pre-order; the only one for me this year is Borderlands 2.
