Been playing since closed Beta. Got my wife addicted to it as well. However, it must be noted that when I got into WoW, I had just moved across the US for a new job and had very few friends in my new town. WoW provided me with a way to virtually hang out with all of the friends that I left behind.

Still, I tend to go hot-and-cold on it. Some weeks, I'm playing 4 hours a day, every day, and then I won't touch it for a week or two.

But I can see why people call it 'WarCrack' and some folks slam on it: it can be a super addictive hamster wheel.

Played for about a year, hit 70, quit. Might go back if I find myself with excesses of time and money.

Tried it? I don't get it.

I'm trying this "Life" game now, gotta say it's pretty boring but atleast for a small fee you get a long subscription.

(I can't get past the "homework" challenge, everytime I complete it more comes. Anyone know any hints or got any cheats?)
Yeahh, if you ignore it, it goes away.

Nope. Regular Warcraft seems better and more satisfying to me. Also, Guild Wars is in my opinion a better game engine with a better story and no subscription fee. WoW fails.

that's the issue, nobody will commit to it.
I believe there are 10 million people that beg to differ. (Is that what it's at nowadays?)
That's still a very small portion of the US and an incredibly small portion of the World.
And it's 11 million these days.

I don't want to start another "Why all the hate on..." thread, so I'll post it here:
Seriously, what the fuck is people's problem with WoW? It's not heroine FFS. I have an addictive personality (and many addictions aswell) and even though it's an amazing game, I often found WoW boring or didn't feel like playing on a particular day. I don't play it for years now, but I don't remember turning into a social reject, when I used to.
So before you post "ZOMG WOW SUCKS AND IS CYBER SMACK FOR NO LIFERS!!!111one" imagine that there are millions of people who had good times with it, grew older, didn't have time for it anymore and stopped playing.
QFT

this is my opinion, if you dont want to get addicted, then you won't.

I just started playing it. I find it pretty enjoyable, Im just taking my time to 60 and then getting the expansions. I met a cool guild that has a sweet weekly RP, so I'm enjoying WoW more than the other MMOs ive played.

Be that as it may, It is the most successful MMO out there. So anyone that likes MMO's at all is sure to find it appealing. I don't think it is in any danger of dying off in the foreseeable future.

I play WoW, but I might quit if I don't get WotLK. I love to grind, and there's not much I can do at 70 without wotlk.(currently I'm trying to see which instances I can solo)

Ragnarok Online has probably more than 11 million players if you count all the private servers.

I used to play it, but then I realized that it was turning me into an absolute prick to my friends in trying to make them play it too. So I kicked WoW to the curb and I haven't looked back. Although I do miss backstabbing noobs as a rogue....NO BAD ASSASSIN!!!! (Hits self with keyboard) I play Assassin's Creed a lot now. Much more interesting.

I played the trial and thought it was pretty good, but I don't have enough money. I also don't want to end up like some people I know...

Wow, you're one of the few people I've encountered who has a well-constructed opinion on WoW. Give yourself a pat on the back. I never really got into WoW since I'm a stingy bastard, and I found a higher fun per dollar ratio elsewhere.
