Sir, i am sorry to inform you, that you forgot to add an option for "Male: plays both" which is my answer. also, you forgot "Female: plays both".

Why do I play Both? because why should I have to pick one? My ratio of male to female characters: 50/50
I left them out as I figured most people do play both if the game is good enough to warrant multiple playthroughs, it's meant to be more of a "what are you drawn to first" argument.

Male usually playing male.
But i have no problem playing a female char, especially when doing new runs, or in cases male version are just plain ugly (like in WoW and human males...ugh).

For some weird reason when i'm making a warrior type of char i usually play as female. There is nothing like a sexy chick in some bad ass armor :)

I am male and I almost always play male. The only reasons I can think of for playing a woman are sexual (and I'm gay so that doesn't apply) or for role-playing. Also, it depends on which model looks better.

Oh I play mostly female characters. In many games it really doesn't matter either females are as strong or weak as the males are. Not to mention armor..it is always funny to see that after you taken an armor of an male enemy and you as female wear it. It looks different :)

And since most rpg's have the most fugly male and female characters anyway.. well those RPG's I play it really doesn't matter there either.

Yeah I don't do JRPG where the girls are super stacked or "Lolita Heaven"
No think Oblivion, Skyrim lets be fair they are fugly. Functional Ugly!

And those Japanese girls just make me shake my head. Also the "10+ Chainmail Bikini" is also part of what I don't like. It is not FUNCTIONAL!

I remember in Star Ocean 2: The Second Story at the beginning of the game you were given the choice between Claude and Rena. I ended up playing separate save files as both, because I wanted all the characters.

For MMOs, it's usually male. Mostly to avoid the creepiness of being hit on by people who think your in-game character's gender signifies your real one. Reminds me of stories about gold farmers willing to be your 'wife' for money.

I play both.
The exception being online games. I feel very strongly that ones online avatar is an extension of oneself, and should reflect that.

Male IRL.

Stealth characters tend towards female, melee male. Mages, it depends on my mood. If it's a game I play third person, where I'm going to be looking at them a lot, female.

I'm female and I do both, but I will more often play as a female.

On my second play through I will play as a dude, and by then I will have figured everything out and just mess around when I'm done with the main story. However, if I'm too lazy to create my character I will just play as a dude and half ass my character build, if available, until I get to the actual game.

I did that with Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but I knew better than to do that with Dark Souls though.

Like to visualize myself within the game. Rarely do i play Female, unless there are different benefits.
Male: Play Male.

I'm female and I tend to play as whichever Gender I have a Character Idea for at the time. Though I must admit, seeing as most female Character Models are Skinny, big boobed bimbos these days, I play as a Male more often then a Female. Just to get some Damn Diversity.

I play as guys pretending to be girls. That's always the best option. Imagine the look on Kaidan's face when he found out "Fem" Shepard had a penis.

I play both, usually male first, but sometimes I play female first. It depends on the game.

I really depends on the race (if the game has different races i.e. Skyrim). Some females of a particular race may look ugly. Or significantly more attractive than females of other races. Same goes for males.

I usually play as male on my first account, then female on my second. The exceptions are where a particular gender simply fits better. Like I always use male account on KotOR because having a female
Darth Revan
just doesn't feel right.
However, on KotOR 2, I always play female, since the canon Exile is female, and it always felt like the character was female, even before i knew the canon plot.

Usually I start female, but it's not always a constant. But yeah, most of the time I play a woman...I think it's mainly because I find them more attractive and by that I mean that all the guys, to me, look ugly.

The only times I have ever had a female character over a male is FFXI where I liked the beginning stats of the Mithra and I was a newbie, and Demon's Souls when my favorite armor set was female only.

I usually go through my first playthrough as "myself", thus a male human. But I love making alts, tons of them, and sometimes they're predominantly female (Better looking avatars in general. In my opinion, at least :p).

However, I went though the Character Creation for Skyrim recently (Trying it out on my brother's PC, I'll be getting the game for myself on PS3 when it's cheaper), and I actually liked the female Orc I made much better than the Male NOrd and Orc character I made. So I'm going with that for my first playthrough.

(I doubt I'll make any alts for Skyrim though. Skyrim seems like an endless project, and with little replay interest for me, as the story seems to be the last point of interest, with little possibility of change between playtroughs)

For me its the same with any game that has a gender option, male for first run than female if I feel like playing through it a second time.
