Really it is coming down to either Ronto or The Commonwealth. I'd sort of like a Fallout set in the NCR, with political chicanery as commentry on our own duplicity with (perhaps) the sundering of the Republic, but I doubt anyone else wants to go back to Shady Sands. Also Ed130's point about Obsidian is food for thought.

I guess the Commonwealth is going to have all manner of replicanty "who is the real monster here anyway?" horror and Cloud Atlas-esque moments with robots shouting about not being subject to criminal abuse whilst I shoot them with a rocket launcher. So you've got a plot and a theme right there.

What happens in Canada though? Canada gets annexxed and then there's all that hulabaloo in Alaska and then it goes boom. That's not really a fat lot to be honest. Yes you'd have the army and the natives still slogging it out, 300 years later, which could be quite good and you'd have the wilderness but is there really anything of any real narrative value in Toronto? Is there a great seat of power or learning or industry or hedonism? I am unaware of anything, but then I am very ignorant.

So I'm going with the Commonwealth.
Yes excellent someone who know ACTUAL FALLOUT LAW and basically summed up my opinion for me and has a sense of humor to boot, so what thy said :)

Also not in till the have addressed all the greater storyline points and different dominant factions from fallout 2 will they EVER leave American soil then it will be based in the UK or China which is where the rest of the FALLOUT narrative has always been heading since the 2d top down isometric days of 2, and EVERYTHING bethesda/obsidian have done with 3/new vegas so far is based of stuff that was written for the half completed 3 before it got scrapped so continuing down the trail already beaten is most definitely there style.

Also Australia and canada are nuclear waste lands in the fallout universe they both got nuked into non existence and neither had vault systems so pretty pointless basing games there, which sucks cos im Australian :p

That DOES make sense, but if that is so then basically "Ronto" is the mid-west. Or mid-east. It's not coastal anyway and therefore in the middle. Which could be pretty rad, thinking about it, as you could get away from the NCR and the Brotherhood and start something fresh. Maybe something with more of a Wasteland vibe.
If Bethesda did the Mid-West they'd almost certainly cack-handedly turn the Chicago/Mid-West chapter of the BoS from FO:Tactics into canon... and most probasbly bring the Mid-West Enclave, the Mid-West Supermutants and a certain Robot Army into the mix as well.
Yeah, well, that doesn't sound too bad. Then again I share your doubts that Bethesda could really capture the jingo-istic ass-hattery of the Mid-West BoS.

Have I understood you right? Do you not like the FO: Tactics setting? Only I rather liked it, particularly as the player operated in something of a moral vacuum.

That's exactly what I want them to do bring in the BOS from tactics and the reapers (deathbots) as a new enemy also beef up the combat and bring in tactical squad based combat with customizable teams just like tactics and try to capture the "jingo-istic ass-hattery of the Mid-West BoS" as you put so well.

I voted for the Commonwealth because I'd definitely be interested in the contrast of the area while maintaining the Americana feel of the game. My official vote would go to NY, however. I'd like to see how the place turned out.

I think they're pretty set on Boston.
In my opinion, I'd like to mess around with the NCR a little more.

Your poll is distinctly lacking New York.
The numbered Fallouts will be made by Bethesda and therefore be on the best coast.
I honestly think they were planning on doing the Commonwealth since they hinted at it in 3.

In Middle Earth.

I don't know, if it's radioactive wasteland, isn't it all more or less the same?

I'd like to see it in Chicago honestly. And not, its TOOOTALLY not because I live near that city.

I would like chicago too, because of the interesting situation that they have there based on fallout tactics. And partially because In the city and want to see devs walking around my neighborhood taking notes on how to recreate this place and then nuke it. Because my neighborhood is the bestest!

Captcha: Bigger in texas.

Well captcha, it may be bigger in texas, but it's better in illinois.

I just wish there was some different scenery, and less discordance between how it portrays the Apocalypse and how it would actually be. Also visuals Mods help but you can only take so much browngreenyellow mixture of environmental detail before it gets tedious to look at.

And while new york is not a bad place, it has been done to death. Boston is pretty damn interesting however considering the whole thing with the androids.

Captcha: Keep Calm

Yeah.... I guess London would be pretty good to. Or maybe Dublin. Or Madrid or Pamplona for the annual running of the Brahmin.

I'd like to see Fallout: Toronto.

You could introduce a new kind of hardcore mechanic regarding the snowy winters of Canada, about not freezing your ass off outside too much. It'd be a nice balance of city and open expanses, too - capturing the awesome balance Fallout3 nailed.
You'd hear a lot about the history of Canada. The annexation, the war at Anchorage, food riots etc. It'd be really interesting to see how Toronto survived and adapted to the nuclear war.

Overall I think it'd be way more interesting then Boston, but frankly as long as it's on the Skyrim engine, I'm happy.

I think a game set in post apocalyptic 50's style London could look quite nice, however I do agree that fallout should be set within the USA. Being as I'm not from the USA I'm not entirely sure what sets any of the places apart that you've mentioned. 50's Chicago could be nice though, one of the landmarks in jazz music and gangsters.

The Caribbean:
1. Still close enough to the United States to still viably have the "retro-America" vibe of Fallout (vintage American cars are very popular in Cuba for example)
2. More tropic location will make for a unique setting when compared to other post-apocalyptic games
3. Ships/island gameplay
4. Weather and storms could add interesting gameplay variations
5. Mutated sea creatures, I can think of nothing more terrifying

Fallout 4 shouldn't take place anywhere that previous Fallout games have explored, especially if Fallout 4 takes place after New Vegas (California is too civilized and rebuilt) or really anywhere that has been exposed to death in other video games (New York). Also, Fallout should take place in the United States because the 1950s "World of Tommorrow" vibe that is in most Fallout games is key to the franchise's setting and overall feel.

But if the game is going to take place earlier in the franchise (maybe concurrent to Fallout 1 or 2) than a game that takes place in, say, pre-Caesar Arizona could be pretty interesting. Maybe Fallout 4 (although I doubt this will happen because Bethesda, not Obsidian, is making it) could take place during Caesar's rise in the East.

Also, Fallout factions should not be shoehorned in needlessly - seeing the Brotherhood of Steel or NCR hundreds of miles from the West Coast smacks of little more than fanservice. I'll actually be fine if there are some Enclave remnants somewhere so long as they don't figure to heavily into the main quest.

Boston. Actually, anything but New York.

I'm tired of NYC being constantly decimated in the movies. I don't need to see it destroyed in a video game too. But it's kind of personal for me. I used to live there and it always makes me uneasy seeing it in ruins.

I loved FOT... buggy and incomplete mess that it was.

What I doubt is Bethesda's ability to discern the parts of it that would make for a compelling game from the overused parts that no longer fit with the Fallout universe (such as the Enclave - leave them dead and gimme a new 'evil' faction and for crap's sake, if they're gonna have Supermutants at least come up with a plausible in-universe reason for them being there).

What I'd like to see, if the BoS MidWest Chapter is involved as a major faction, is to explore the goals and methods of the BoS and it's outcomes over time. Have the player start as a BoS initiate and either go rogue or hang around and try to influence the direction of the BoS and so on.
