Ok, so I'm disturbed that no one has yet mentioned the use of this game as a vessel for sexist hatred...

Just kidding. One thing that made me say "Hell, yeah!" to the plot of Other M was the realization that the Federation, ever presented in the series as a holy force for good (not unlike Star Trek's federation), was up to no good, was attempting to harvest Metroids for use as a bioweapon.

It may not be earth-shattering in its originality, but you had to figure that at some point someone other than "space pirates" would become the bad guy, and this did strike me as the best development possible for the evolution of Samus' place in her universe. Rest assured, more Metroid games will be made, and at some point players are going to want to do something other than obtain the grapple beam and fight Ridley a sixth time.

This opens up quite a few opportunities, for storytelling as well as gameplay. Zero Mission had stealth elements and I'd like to see some real espionage and sneakin' around added to the gameplay. We're always concerned that a new play mechanic may rob us of what is considered the essential Metroid experience: isolation, vulnerabily and mood coupled with exploration and a non-linear approach. But games new and old, from Splinter Cell to Megaman, have done a good job of getting around the limitations of their respective genres, and taking a queue from games like this would probably set the series in the right direction. The series cannot survive, outside of retro nostalgia, without evolving, so adding a few zero-suit stealth levels with branching paths and literary purpose would add to the feeling of vulnerability. Hell, they could take the isolation thing in a new direction - Samus can no longer depend on old allies since she no longer knows who to trust.

Bounty Hunters in general have always been presented in sci-fi as having questionable morality. Hell, most of the ones in Metroid Prime Hunters are driven by greed. But since they exist outside of the Federations purview, some of them may be the only people Samus can initially trust. This presents the perfect opportunity to reintroduce the other hunters to the metroid canon. It also allows for RPG elements and choices that affect the outcome of the game, as in Mass Effect 2.

The Chozo could also be re-introduced. Perhaps there are remaining Chozo who have settled very far away from Federation space, and they have sent an ambassador to the Federation (since the two have a history of being allies), and the rumors of illegal bioweapons are disturbing to the Chozo. The goal of the game could be for Samus to find out who's responsible for the Metroid engineering and expose them before the Chozo declare war on the Federation, and too shut down the operation entirely.

I'd also like to see a thorough re-vamping of the weapons in the game. I'd keep most of the morph ball abilities (spider ball and bombs especially), and the basic missiles, but I'd change the beams and all of the other equipment. It's time for something new.

As for location(s), I think that Prime: Corruption has had the best interface so far. 3 planets where 90% of the game takes place, and 3-4 other locations for smaller sections of the game, plus the ability to revisit any location the player's previously been to.

All of this allows for Federation, Chozo, Hunter and Pirate enemies, and perhaps all 4 as (grudging) allies as well.

What do you think? What changes would you make for the next Metroid?

And please, try to keep discussion of Samus' treatment in Other M to a minimum. There are plenty of threads for that

Federation harvesting Metroids was already done beforehand in Fusion, so there was really nothing new.

For me, it would be very interesting for Samus Aran, bounty hunter extraordinaire, to, you know, hunt some goddamned bounties for once. I think this is actually one of the reasons I liked Echoes(Prime 2) so well. It starts out with a simple, "Samus, this is the Federation, we have a job we need you to do," and while she never receives payment for it, she got new weaponry, new enemies, and new allies. It felt a lot less like a retread than Prime did. Don't get me wrong, Prime was great, and I guess that since it was the first 3D Metroid game they couldn't change the formula too much.

For a nice, simple, short answer would be, make Prime 4 play more like Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time.

Beat me to it. The Federation being the bad guys was already done in Fusion, not to mention it ending with Samus pretty much becoming a criminal. (It says in the ending that the blame for the loss of the research station and the destruction of SR388 will most likely be put on her.)So it might be interesting to see what they might do if they do a post-Fusion Metroid game.

What I think might be an interesting thing for them to try is to approach the game from another character's viewpoint. Instead of playing Samus you're playing, say, a Galactic soldier fighting to just survive. You won't have a large collection of powers and weapons at your disposal, can't take near as many hits and what little weaponry and bullets you do have isn't as effective against most enemies as Samus's beams. The list goes on.

Basically, while it might not exactly be a Metroid title, expanding upon the series by putting in a related game based in the Metroid universe might be something worth trying, and might give the 'poor, abused' Samus a brief rest.

As for Other M. Enjoyed the game, found the story somewhat interesting and really liked what they TRIED to do with Samus. The poor girl just fell victim to poor writing and half-hearted voice acting.

Metroid: Reach? No thanks. . .

Other M got some things right, but ultimately botched the plot--even though Samus never was, as so many irate gamers claim, a feminist icon in anything other than the fanfiction of her apologists--and excised much of the depth that characterized, say, Super Metroid.

So--make a sequel to Other M with greater depth, a revised narrative, and a handful of innovative new features. That would be ideal, anyway.

I would play the game that you just described.
I think that stealth gameplay would be an interesting addition, and it would certainly make the game more diverse.

Since it's intermediate in the story, ignore Other M and move on to stories after Fusion.

Since Samus stepped on the Federation's toes at the end of Metroid Fusion (I won't spoil why here) it seems natural to focus on that as a plot hook.

Perhaps Samus goes on the run from the Galactic Federation. They want to bring her in for questioning and possibly trial (she did disobey direct orders). Then the Federation hires another promising new bounty hunter to track Samus down. Since Samus is technically far more powerful, this new hunter has orders to only make contact and do everything s/he can to detain/distract Samus long enough for a much larger armed force to arrive.

The two bounty hunters engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse (paralleling Fusion to a degree), as Samus tries to reason with the new hunter and vice-versa. This opens up opportunities for Samus to showcase her skills, relate her experiences to the other bounty hunter (possibly repairing the horrific damage done to her character in Other M), and prove her innocence. Hell, Samus might even save this other bounty hunter's life.

If one wanted to avoid having to do the "Metroid Item Reset", they could have the game alternate between playing as Samus and this other bounty hunter, with the actions one takes effecting the difficulty/path the other takes at certain points in the game. A carefully laid trap would close off an avenue, forcing the other bounty hunter to find an alternate path, or prevent the other hunter from gaining access to certain upgrades at that time.

This allows for variant play since the other bounty hunter possesses very different skills/abilities than Samus and her Power Suit. S/He would be receiving information and equipment packages/upgrade from the Galactic Federation (again, similar to Fusion), though in a more limited manner due to the environment/location.

Ultimately, things come to a head when the Federation's main force arrives, and the decisions you made during the game could lead to different endings.

In short, as long as Nintendo doesn't wreck Samus's character again, I won't really mind.
It's quite possible to tell a simple, but solid story here. Retro Studios did it for three games, I don't see why it can't happen again.

Prime 3 was one of the only FPS games I enjoyed this generation (probably due to the healthy dose of adventure and puzzle elements). So I'd be very happy to see a return to that.

Samus on the run is perfect. It's been done to death plenty with other franchises (at least in movies) but it'd be a fresh take for Metroid. Item reset? Meh. I'm not terribly concerned with having tons of weapons/abilities and being able to go anywhere in the game right from the start. It's a lot more exciting to slowly access newer areas and then backtrack. I also like the idea of her being pursued by another bounty hunter. Betrayal's always fun - they could work that angle.

To the posters who mentioned a 4th Prime game, I believe both the head of the Prime 3 project and a higher up at Nintendo expressed sometime last year that it's not off the table and that they'd love to do it if the opportunity presents itself.
