I'd played Torchlight a good bit before they retroactively added Steam achievements, but the game decided not to unlock the ones for stuff I'd already done, so I restarted for a bit.

I got Titan Quest over the holiday sale (along with the entire Telltale games collection!), but haven't played it much, either.

Which to grind away at?

And please give reasons as to why. Reasons are more important than the poll. After all, a grinding lootfest RPG is a major undertaking.

The urge to grind away has finally hit, and I am ready and waiting to begin.

I'm currently playing Mount And Blade.

Its so goddamn addictive!
(And it has mod support too!)

I would say play Titan's Quest, as it may be a bit fresher to you.

But I haven't played it myself, (despite buying it in the sale!) though, so Torchlight might be more fun, as you can hunt achievements.

Titan Quest should fill out the grinding needs, I say go for it.

Your avatar is staring about me with determination.
I just wish I wasn't so damn confused about the "Mastery" system.

Well if you're not up for planning your character to the tiniest detail, go for Torchlight. Titan Quest... like Oblivion... planning... toooo much ¬_¬

Case and point, my Mage class is now a warrior, and my warrior is a mage.

Once I had my flaming death throwing insta kill any mother ****er attack, I didn't see a point hitting them with my sword.

Between those two, I'd say Torchlight, but both are pretty lame IMO. You'd better play Diablo 2 again, it's much more enjoyable.

Titan Quest. I like Torchlight, but Titan Quest has a lot more depth, and a better plot.

It's actually very easy. There are several Masteries, each denoting a certain combat/magic style. You can pick any two Masteries. For example, one of the best masteries in the game for solo-ing is Nature(first)+Defense(second). Nature gives you summonable pets and healing spells, while Defense makes you into a tank.

Each of the Masteries has a tree. You can't just go pumping points into high-level skills immediately though: you have to level up the Mastery by putting points into it.

This is from a modded version of the game: Zombification is not a real Mastery.

Now then, you see the bar on the left? See how it intersects the skill trees? That's your Mastery Level. Pumping points into your Mastery (as opposed to skills) allows you to access higher-level skills, and also buffs certain stats. Most TQ players pump points into the Mastery CONSTANTLY until it hits max, stopping only to grab one or two good skills along the way: this is because hitting the max Mastery level not only makes your character really awesome, it also gives them fantastic abilities that will save your arse.

I HIGHLY suggest that you read the Mastery guides at the Titan Quest fan forums [http://www.titanquest.net/forums/classes/] once you decide what you want to play as. There's also a good FAQ at Gamefaqs dedicated to making (outrageously) powerful characters.

Will doing it without a character build guide be fine for Normal? I generally don't play grinders long enough to do all the difficulties. Such as Hell in Diablo 2. I just beat it once. Then start over with a new character type.

To put it in better words: I've never been one to put points into strength (and other illogical things) on a mage, just so that I can equip a staff.

Try playing through it by yourself: if you find that you're being overwhelmed, try reading one of the class guides.

Just pump points into (your first, second can come later) mastery (grabbing the odd skill as you go) until you get the best skill for that class. As far as attribute (str, dex, int) points go... that all depends on what kind of character you intend on playing. A tank for example would put 3/2 points in Str for every point put into int and dex. That sort of thing isn't my specialty though. You'd be better off reading something on the subject.
