I haven't played Spore, but with all the hype leading up to it and the backlash from its security system I started wondering what kind of people were playing and what races they were creating. Enjoy.

I preferred the herbivore route. It wasn't the first one I made, but it was the first one to not get blown to pieces instanly in the space stage.

Had one pig like guy with leaves on his back, herbivore. Civ stage bugged and I couldn't take over the last city to advance.

One fish like omnivore, was intended to be an intergalactic race of tycoons and traders, but people got into war with me for no reason and my one ship had no weapons when all three cities were attacked at the same time :(

One is a raptor like über violent predator, but I got bored once I reached Civ stage.

Herbivores - I wanted to create something so successful that it would eventually populate most people's worlds. Something totally innuous; along the lines of how ants and cockroaches are some of the planet's most numerous creatures but without having a big impact.

I swear I was creating my creature for hours, mixing and matching parts until I came up with the highest attack possible!

Going into spore, I was all up and going "I'm gonna make this, and then I'm gonna make this!", but once I actually got started playing, I found it a hell of a lot more fun to just follow logical evolution. (Not making any incredibly extreme changes, just having my creature grow a little at a time.) My only goal was to have a humanoid creature by tribal phase... which I did.

My first creature was a carnivore, a praying mantis sort of creature that with four arms and reverse jointed legs.

My second creature was essentially a mix between a boar and a tauren. It was an herbivore all the way, but damn they were good in a fight. (5's all the way across the board for melee abilities, and a crap load of health.)

If I ever play Spore, I am planning on making the Overlords from Childhood's End. I thought it would be pretty cool to make a demon like alien.

To be honest, while the monsters DO look open-ended, it's all just cosmetic add-ons.
A monster will not run faster if added 6 legs to it rather than two.
You cannot create much that is Human-like in the Spore editor either. You're pretty much limited to what the creature will look like and even then it adds very little change to what your monster is gonna do.

Creating a carnivore and playing as one is way easier than being a herbivore and befrending with everyone.
It just annoyed the heck out of me how I had to upgrade all the different forms of communicative skills like charm, singing and all that shit just to be friends with everyone so in the end I said "fuck that!" and killed everyone else instead. It's just way easier.

A Mjor misconception in this game is:
You cannot create EVERYTHING.
You need to unlock bodyparts as you play the game with your character.
Not ALL parts are open to you right away. You are VERY limited with the VERY FEW PARTS you got. YOu have to find bodyparts as you go and there's only a few opportunities where you can add/replace new parts. There's kind of a difference between creating creatures in Spore and using the stand-alone Spore Creature Creator.

So anyway, to answer your question, I made a bipedal Xenomorph look-alike creature.

I'd totally make a zergling.
Then I'd make a creature that moves by rolling from one single-jointed leg to the next.
Then I'd probably try to make batman.

Each as a carnivore and herbivore on separate playthroughs.

Oh, and Combine Advisors too.

That would be awesome. As soon as one get's into the MP, though, everyone else would be screwed.

I made a tentacle monster! It had a big eye in the middle and mouths on all of it's appendages. It wasn't very powerful but it looked frightening enough to make all my friends shudder when they saw it move.

It is a shame that you can't make humans. You can make stuff that looks a lot like a human without a FACE - easier for me since i know a more about anatomy than the average joe.

i made a violent race of giant stick insects. They were pretty crazy and had good attack. I think i wiped out about 30+ species just using them trying to unlock all the parts.

I also created a tiny 1 legged bird like created. F'kin hilarious.

Mine looks like some sort of hybrid dragon. Started off as a mutant insect. Go figure.

I also made a Bobin - bat cross robin.
