Get the orange box.
This man speaks sense.
The Orange Box is a steal.
Portal, HL2 + ep1, TF2.

If you're not too keen on that , I'd reccomend Portal.
By far the best recent game I've played.
Kind of short, but made of pure, undilluted epic win!

all of them, get the valve complete pack for (whats it now 90$?) and you'll save a lot of money, most of their games are worth while. You wont regret it.

Orange Box because it's a package deal.

But seriously, if you only have to get one, HL2. Everything else is pretty great, but if you only get one, HL2 (or TF2 if you don't plan to buy any other stuff from them ever again, since that can be enjoyed longer) is the epic-est.

All of the above.
This.

Although, if you ahve to get 'one' game, just buy the Orange Box.

HL2, HL2:Ep1, HL2:Ep2, TF2 and Portal all in one package. You can give TF2 and HL2 to someone else.

Counter-Strike: Source is also worth checking out, but prepare to get your ass handed to you by the people who have been playing that game for YEARS.

Get The Orange Box, it's got a load of those games in it and its pretty good value for money, which in the world of Valve is a rare thing indeed. (Besides free DLC before I get boned by some fanboy)

I'll reply having actually read that you already own TF2 and HL2.

You're looking at different games here, so it depends. If you want single player, I agree that the orange box is probably your best bet, as it nets you Portal and Episode 1 and 2 (too bad you missed the last 2 50% of everything half life). If you liked Half Life, more Half Life is good, and I very much enjoyed Portal's puzzles. It gives you a good sense of accomplishment when you launch yourself over some gap or obstacle. Yes it was short, but it's not a full-priced game, either.

For multiplayer, go L4D2, no real point in picking up the first one really, as the second is the "new and improved" and will probably be maintained longer than the first.

I personally am skipping L4D2 because I rarely have a solid hour to play through a campaign/versus, so single player games and TF2 are my mainstays.

If you were to hold a gun to my head...I'd probably ask you why you were holding a gun to my head and make you answer the question: "Single player or multiplayer?" That answer is your answer.

HL2 Episode 1-2! Don't you want Episode 3 to come out sooner? I can't wait to see how they'll top the hilarious ending to Episode 2!
