On the associations, I know when I hit edit on my machine, it opens paint.net instead of windows paint. Somehow that got changed, so there's got to be a way to do it. Double-clicking/opening is still performed through the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Thanks for letting me know about classic shell. I'm trying it out now.

Oh there is a way to restore that functionality.

Grab a program called CreativeElementPowerTools http://www.creativelement.com/powertools/.

I can understand why they hide these things by default but surely they could include an advanced option for people who want to access them.

Classic Shell is a great little tool that even gives you back a classic start menu should you want it.

I use Windows Vista. Hopefully in a few weeks time I will be getting a new laptop though and will have Windows 7, or 8. I don't know if there even is a Windows 8 yet, I'm that far behind on the times!
Windows 8 gets it's official release on the 26th of this month.... Microsoft has developed a penchant in recent years for releasing software in October ( dunno why....) But Wind 7 October 2010 Office for Mac October 2011 and now October 2012 and we get Win 8.

Me, I'm sticking with 7. Even just bought another copy to put on my new build that I'm saving up for.

XP, since it's not technically dead until next April. Upgrade may happen at some point, but not until I swap out the motherboard and processor.

Or buy a new computer and have to downgrade from 8.
XP is supported until 2014, so you have another year

Also what's wrong with 8? I'm using that now and I've had no issues with it, it's the best running OS I've had on my machine (and I've have Vista, 7 and all of 8's previews on it)

EDIT: noticed a bunch of posts referring to Win8 trial versions, thought I'd point out that mine's the full version.

I'm running Win7 x32 on my computer and my netbook, but I never liked any of the visual interfaces after 95. There's something so eloquent about the blunt grey and blue windows that I wouldn't change for the world.

I chose Windows 7, 64 bit when I made my new pc. It's a improvement over XP for the most part.

OSX and Windows 7 dual boot. Although I mostly just use OSX because I think Macs intentionally make windows take longer to boot and run some stuff due to the bootcamp program it has to run. Even gave the Mac a head start on my previous Laptop that was lower spec than the Mac and used for about 2 years and it still beat the Mac to start up windows.

I'm so far not convinced of any reason to upgrade my windows 7 boot to 8 as I only see it as useful for touch screen interfaces.

XP in the main, but I do recognise that I am rather out of date and accept that there's going to be some creeping incompatibility problems when running what is effectively an 11 year old OS with a few security and UI tweak patches.

(Compare previous editions: it would be the same as using Win98 until 3 years ago, 3.1 until 2003, and original MacOS/Workbench/GEM until about 1995/96...)

It's mostly because my main PC is a laptop I bought in 2006 (before Vista was even a thing, and buying something with XP SP2 on it felt fairly advanced coming from home/family/workplace experience of using 98, ME and 2000), and having long since upgraded it to the absolute limit, I'm now trying to work up the budget to replace it, possibly at the point it hits exactly 7 years old. Other life things like my car ... bike ... flat going wrong in various ways have kind of taken precedence instead, though.

I mulled over upgrading the machine to 7, but... given the age of the hardware, the gradually diminishing effective performance level (it's finally sliding from "acceptable" to "a little sluggish" for everyday use, as it has decent-for-2006 specs, but game performance disappeared long ago) and the likely issues with finding suitable drivers - combined with the sheer lack of benefit that I've been able to determine in most post-upgrade cases I've seen - I decided not to bother.

At work I'm about the last person still using it as there hasn't been any opportunity to re-image my desk PC ... and the Win7 image has some bugs I'm waiting for everyone else to get done with reporting and ironing out before I finally make the leap. It works fine as it is, after all.
(Will definitely take 7 over 8 for now, mind)

Most people I know are on 7 by now. Not going to complain about being left behind when I am so pointedly out of date.

Down under my desk, btw, is an olllllllllllllllld laptop (strictly AC power only by this point) with Win95 Lite and Office 97 installed on a 2GB CF card in place of its HDD, which I use for distraction-free word processing and the like when everything gets a bit too much. Or at least I would, if I hadn't been so stupid as to leave the "solitaire" box ticked when installing...
(It still does everything it ever needed to, and ever will need to do. Therefore, it's still a useful tool. Same as the 2006 machine will be once it's replaced - though it's kind of beaten up and has a few broken bits, it will be retained for its exceptional compatibility with software and (Cardbus/USB) hardware produced in the 1995 thru 2010 period...)

Why isn't Windows 8 in this poll?
Not that I'm ever going to use it, but I could already if I would like to.
Because it hasn't been officially released yet.

Using Windows 7 Enterprise, having previously used Windows Vista Enterprise and not expecting to change any-time soon.

I would still be happily using XP if Just Cause 2 hadn't forced me to begrudgingly upgrade. I've since found that 7 is pretty much just as good, and even has slightly better support for older PC games than XP had. Who would've thunk it?

I have an XP laptop... It still works so I haven't upgraded it... but it is running VERY slow now... and I want something new and shiney anyway, so will probably upgrade soon! Probably to windows 7...

To be honest though... I may not bother! I may just use my TV/X-Box (I am sure both have or are getting full browsers) and then get a very cheap netbook for word/ppt/excel?

I use 7 at work and on my gaming computer. My other PC came with, and still has Vista though. That was a poor purchase...

I still use XP, I love older games and they run smoother than in Win7 (though I have that installed too as backup)

A Vista user here. Came with the computer around 4 or 5 years ago, hasn't caused me a single problem and I've been able to play every single game that's come out between now and then without upgrading my PC once in any capacity.

Oddly, I'm even able to run the games that according to spec-testing website thingys, I shouldn't be able to run.
