Charmander in Red version.

I picked Charmander because I thought it looked cool, and I wanted the additional challenge (and perceived power) of the fire starter. I'd heard tell that the game was harder with Charmander, and for a while it was true. Brock and Misty are tailor made to take a fire pokemon down, and Mount Moon was an entire dungeon of fire resistant enemies (Zubat non-withstanding, the confuse-casting jerk).

If you count the buggy emulation of Ruby that I never got more than ten minutes into...

Fire, Torchick.

For the first (and so far, only) game I've put real time into:

Game: SoulSilver
Type: Fire, Cyndaquil (and a girl one, at that. I thought female starters were really uncommon), took her with me all the way to the Elite Four :D

Charmander from Pokemon Red, that little guy was awesome!

Because of him I've always used fire pokemon in my team.

Man, has it been a while...

Back in the days I always went with that little turtle like water Pokemon, Squirtle, in Pokemon Red.

I went with Pikachu in Yellow, don't think you could choose anything else as I recall.

Really can't remember what I picked in the Gold version, probably the water type again whatever it was.

...Wonder where I put my Gameboy Color.

Pikachu. Got Pokemon Yellow when I was like 3.
Good times. Didn't figure out I could save though so I always got to Brock then gave up.

A Bulbasaur that I nicknamed Mr. Poké... I think. Well I know it was Bulbasaur anyway.
