Gravity gun, the portal gun would honestly end up killing most of us, bad momentum and you go splat. The fact that you have to travel one place, open a portal and then open a portal in a another place is ok if you're going to travel back and forth repeatedly between those two places. It clearly doesn't work like how some people are saying, you have to physically see and be able to shoot the spot you intend to go to, you can't just decide hey I want to open a portal in a bank vault. Also the fact is that even if you wanted to use a portal between work and home to save you the time, the fact remains that there is a gaping hole left at your work and your home that anyone can walk through. There has been nothing in the game to indicate that the portal gun can willingly close a portal, the only means is by opening a new one. So unless you want to grant people free access to your home, and the fact that your employer probably wouldn't want to grant you free access to work at any hour of the night...it probably wouldn't work out. And even if you could willingly close a portal you'd have to drive back to work/home to open a new portal.
Whereas the gravity gun would be a somewhat useful tool, hell you could open up a 1 man moving company and make a ton of money.

I would like to own a portal pistol (as it would be more handy than the gun, with the ability to temporarily turn the portals "offline" so that they will disappear, but appear back when turned "online".

I have a 45mile commute on public transport - I have to get up at 5am to get a bus to town, a train to another town in another county and then get picked up by boss to drive to another town in another county.

Portal in the office and one at home, job done - 4hr commute down to a second.

I would go for the Portal gun. Getting to places you can't reach, getting to places in the distance, that you can see, but would take you ages to get to. What some people on this thread don't realise, however, is that you need a clear line of site between you and your target, and you can only make 2 portals at a time.

Honestly I can see getting myself killed with a portal gun. You fuck up even ONCE and you're probably going about 100 miles an hour in one direction or another. I suppose if you were good enough you could keep it going forever with well placed portals, but thats just prolonging the inevitable. Plus it has the ability to slowly end the world if someone wanted it to (portal on the moon, portal on earth = slowly drain the air)
Gravity gun is still useful and I probably wont kill myself in the process of using it.

Definitely the portal gun. Also is it wierd that the first two posters in this thread are using Fallout avatars?

The gravity gun can lift things, I can do that with the correct machinery. The portal gun however, could allow me to use the toilet while I'm still at the computer. That is progress.
Not to mention being able to reach for a drink from the fridge whenever you felt like it.

Edit: Although I think some people are forgetting that to use the portal you have to be able to make a portal in both places, so it's not like you can just immediately travel anywhere, unless I'm missing something.
This. As fun as it sounds to be able to port off to Paris for the afternoon, you'd already need to have a portal there - so at some point you'd have had to take the long route to set up the portal in the first place. Then, should you ever want to travel anywhere else, you'd lose your portal in Paris and have to again, take the long route to your next destination to set up the exit portal and... well, what's the point?

Useful for travelling quickly within line of sight - you can do that by running. Not to mention, we're not androids, want to pull off a jump and you'd die fairly spectacularly.

For this reason, I pick the Gravity Gun.

Alyx pretty much sums up the use of the gravity gun for you. "We usually use it for heavy lifting, but I've found it handy for clearing minefields."

So it's pretty much a portable forklift, with some limited military applications (other than the whole 'everything is a projectile' tactic, which I can see would cause a lot of problems in a real life combat scenario).

The Portal gun, on the other hand... well, it's a fucking PORTAL gun, think of the things you could do with it! We could make huge advances in science, transport, military hardware etc. or you could just use it to get home quickly.

Of course, mass production would be out of the question. Imagine the chaos an extremist organisation could cause with it, or even a small time assassin with friends in high places.

So I guess the Portal gun would be much more versatile, but the gravity gun doesn't have potential to screw the world over.
I'm also pretty sure the portal gun would allow perpetual energy machine to be created, I don't really know how though...

Maybe some sort of pulley? If you create a portal in the floor and ceiling, drop the device and it can create power as it falls forever?
a modified mortar with a energy transever and air intake/ exaust as it falls the wind into the intakes creates power and with the power the mortar goes faster due to the thrust multiplications of said turbines (think Jets) and a energy by lazer with a room that is the reciver.

Gravity gun, as the Portal gun only works in specific environments. I probably wouldn't be able to use it in very many places.

I hope you don't mind my being so forward, but... I love you.

OT: I would have to go with the portal gun. Hell, I barely move as it is, and the portal gun would cut down what few trips I have to make. I'm sold.

I was going to say this is impossible, but I'm rethinking it now. Yes, this could be possible, since the portal would change the distance of the object from the ground with no extra loss of energy, which I think would add free gravitational potential energy to the object. In this case, maybe have a tunnel made of rollers on both sides, and some of them are hooked up to electrical generators. Something like that?

or transport large quantities of seawater to the top of a hill, having gravity pull it through generators, back down to the bottom, where the portal starts again

The Portal gun. Each one, given infinite energy, and infinitely pristine working condition, would give you immense power. But with the portal gun, you could do SOOOO much more! Travel is the grease to the world's gears, so to speak. Everyone thinks it's money, but the truth is that it's travel.

Our world started out in villages and huts. By walking, we soon found other villages and formed towns. By riding horses, we were able to connect those towns. With the carriage came more comfortable travel and more and more people moved about, the world became more connected. Think of how the world is today. Everything from Walmart to Popeye's chicken is dependent upon our ability to travel.

We can send people or packages around the globe within days, and that supports our world more than anything else. Sure, we need money, but all the money in the world won't help you if can't get it anywhere. Why do you think gas is so high? It's not because oil is so scarce, it's because of what the oil represents. Just imagine what our world would become if we suddenly had to rely on animals and nature again for ALL transportation. Thats why I'd chose the Portal gun.
