Good Story vs Good Fun

Which is more important to you as a gamer? Would you rather a deep and meaningful experience, or just a whole heap o'fun?

hmmm well i voted wrong. i was thinking about it and i realized that i will play through a game with masterful storytelling and sucky game mechanics, but a fun game without a story like metal slug or alien hominid, will never grab my attention. i find a good story compells me to play a game much more than good gameplay, take psychonauts for example. bland gameplay, but the story and tone and characters and everything was funny and interesting and creative. i love that game. its a lot of fun in my book.

A good story makes a game fun, so I picked fun. It's like voting for both of them!

I voted story mostly because of MGS which is very story driven and very fun at least for me. So it didn't really matter which one I voted for. Twist and turns it has it all. Though I do hear some people don't fully understand the story but I do. And I guess that's why I love it so much an understandable story means everything.

Either one is good. I like Halo because it's fun, and I like Drakengard because of its story.

A great story with no fun makes for a terrible grind in between the story sections. Like a TV show with far too many ads. So I'd have to go with fun. Doom had no story yet is still a blast to play.

Yeah I'm the biggest fence sitter around. I want my games to either have both, or to be excessively fun to the point where I'll make up my own story. Like F.E.A.R!

No one will buy a game if they dislike playing it just because of the story...

Bioshock? good story. no fun to me whatsoever.

Fun. Agreed with MikeyW. A game can be fun, but without much in the way of story (Serious Sam?) But a game with a great story, but not much fun to play is just painful.
(Planescape - yes fanbois, it is a good game. But it's just not fun to play)

That being said, I'd take great gameplay and great story over anything else, anyday. I'd rather there was no skimping on either.

Wow a toughie... I'm gonna have to go with story on this one... but only just.

I'll tell you why I chose it over fun.

Max Payne 1 had awesome gameplay with the ability to slow down time and shoot just about everyone. It was great fun. But it also had an awesome storyline. The reason I chose Story over fun is because this is my favourite game, but I wanted to see which was better from MP1, Story or Fun?

*Spoiler Warning* (Just in case you didn't play MP1 and would like to)

When I shot down the chopper by making the radio tower fall onto it, I had finally made it to the end. The gameplay was awesome, but so were the storyboards. It was the LAST storyboard picture that clinched it.

Max Payne (While in the cop car): "Woden was there... in the crowd, standing by the
sidelines. It wouldn't be over till the man with the
patch would say so. He'd say the right words. I knew he
would. He'd better. Woden grinned smugly. It was the grin
of a winner."

Max Payne: That made two of us.

For some reason, it made fall in love with the whole story, because it looped back onto itself (Which I love seeing). And then an awesome line to finish off with. So, by a whisker, for me, Story takes the podium.

I always have great fun if I have a great story, so this doesn't really work for me. : P
