I'm on a bit of a quest to find at least one game I like from every genre (See? I'm open to enjoying something other than mindless shooters). This week's genre: JRPG's. What's a good game for people who aren't "the kind of Japanophile, Naruto cosplaying, subtitle watching Westerner who spends his every waking hour gargling Pocky and cursing the roundness of his eyes" (Yahtzee's words. not mine)? Available Platforms: 360, PS3/Vita or PC.

I honestly don't know what appeals to the JNcswWwshewhgPcre, so I'll hold off on that.

If you don't mind a bit of that aesthetic, I honestly recommend Tales of Symphonia. The gameplay is great, the combat system is realtime and encounters are visible and avoidable (if you're into that), and the story pretty damn good (a touch cheesy, but its idealism isn't bad, and it's balanced out when you finally realize just how much horrible shit is going on behind the scenes). Anything in the Tales series would work, I think, though Symphonia and Vesperia are supposed to be the best starting points.

Otherwise, you can't really go wrong with Final Fantasy VI as a starting point. Combat can get a bit repetitive, but it's still fun, the rest of the game is great, and the story and characters are fantastic. It's one of the very few non-visual novels that's ever made me cry. And if it matters, Yahtzee mentioned that he liked that one.

Many many of the Final Fantasy games have fairly simple combat systems and enjoyable characters/storylines. FF8 is probably the most confusing, so I'd avoid that, but 9 or 10 are great choices, 7 is the revered classic, and 4 and 6 are great in my experience. I wouldn't try to convert anyone to JRPGs with 12 or 13.

Tales games are great because the combat is the most action-oriented of any series I've played. If you don't like anime, the characters can veer dangerously close to some obnoxious stereotypes, and the stories tend to spiral into incomprehensible nonsense, but the gameplay is always fun and there are tons of sidequests.

In my little experience with Star Ocean, (just the new one, The Last Story), it just seems like a worse version of the Tales series. Action based combat, but really grating characters and average story

Earthbound is very funny and creative. The combat system isn't very complex or engaging, but the experience, with the goofy characters and great music and just bizarreness of it all, is totally worth a look.

I'd avoid the Disgaea series. It's funny and has good stories, but the game has a lot of depth that it expects you to explore, there are LOTS of numbers to consider that are never adequately explained, and lots of grinding is expected of you. A good game, but not one to start with.

The Persona games are my personal favorites. It's very Japanese, but in a reasonably authentic seeming cultural way rather than an anime way if that makes sense. The characters are what make these games, as they are very well written and fleshed out. The music is killer, and the stories are great. The combat is straightforward, but they developed their own language for spell names, which can get confusing, and the game can be brutally unfair, like gettting a game over from one unlucky attack unfair. I'd recommend Persona 4 because they do a better job with the characters in my opinion, and they also introduced a couple changes that reduces the cheap deaths. They also have an easy mode that gives you some extra lives.

If you have a DS or GBA or something, Golden Sun is fun, simple but flashy combat with a good amount of customization, and good puzzles and exploration factors. However, the newest one (Dark Dawn) is probably the weakest of the bunch, and the best (The Lost Age) is best experienced after playing the first one.

All in all, I'd recommend Tales for the funnest battles (either Symphonia if you can or Vesperia), or Persona 4 for something unique and very engaging, even if there will be a decent bit of culture shock. Final Fantasy games are consistently very solid if neither of the other two seem up your alley

Final Fantasy VII or XII I'd recommend. X is pretty good, but some people get sick of some of the characters very quick. (Especially Tidus.)

Oh. For those consoles. Was gonna suggest Pokemon as the best start up one or maybe Xenoblade to try and ween people off WRPGs.

Suikoden is probably too difficult to get for people too.

Dragon Quest aint got anything for them consoles.

Only great JRPGs I played on the PS3 were Tales of Graces F and Nier. So I would have to recommend them. 360 aint really too great for JRPGs and does the PC even get them?

Disgaea and Valkyria Chronicles are kinda a lot different from regular JPRGs, so wouldn't say they're best to get people into JRPGs as the norm. They are still great games tho.

And Last Story is a different series to Star Ocean. I think meaning Last Hope. Couldn't get away with that one myself.

As much as I hate to I would recommend the Final Fantasies on the PSN as easiest jumping on period.

There's an auto-attack feature that will get you through everything but boss fights, don't think that's one of Suikoden's problems :p

Suikoden 2 or 5 would be your best bet, if you decided to go down that route. While its still 'anime' in appearance its not the sort of thing that falls on anime cliches. At least not obnoxiously so.

I love Persona 4 a lot, but if the story doesn't engage you, you'll find it torturous. The genre I put it in isn't so much JRPG as its own genre of "Pokemon Murder Mystery Dating Sim".

In the end I think I'd recommend Suikoden 2, its beatable in under 20 hours as part of an easter egg that assumes you skip everything about the game and know what you're doing. However, it does have a 'collect them all' aspect too...

Maybe you should try one of the Pokemon games, it seems like every game I enjoy falls under that sort of banner :p

Honestly, for the consoles you have available, I don't have much. Resonance of Fate on the PS3 is a damn good game, but not terribly forgiving to someone who isn't a bit genre-savvy with the grinding aspects of JRPGs.

If you had a DS, I was gonna suggest the re-release of Chrono Trigger, as it's about the most forgiving JRPG in history that still holds water as its own IP (ie. not a cookie-cutter stereotype of a title). Still, if you can find Final Fantasy Chronicles [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Chronicles] for the PS1 (I see it new for $17 on Amazon, your mileage may vary by location), that should play on your PS3, and would get you both Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV (arguably the first of the series' true golden years).

Aside from that... I know next to nothing about the PS Vita, but if it can play PSP UMDs, Star Ocean: The First Departure [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Ocean:_The_First_Departure] is an excellent game, as is The Second Story [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Ocean:_The_Second_Story] PS1 release, which should play on your PS3 (both are a bit grindy, though).

-

TL;DR: consider this a vote for Chrono Trigger in the form of Final Fantasy Chronicles, if you can get it.

Chrono Trigger. -Chrono Trigger-. It's my favorite JRPG of all time, -and- it's incredibly easy and simple.

I'm going to recommend Lost Odyssey for the 360:
-Battle system is turn based but has enough nuances to keep it interesting
-Very little (if any) grinding needed to complete the main story
-Lots of well-written short stories that you can read spread throughout the game
-Some of the best voice acting I've heard in a video game
-(Mostly) likeable characters
-Great soundtrack

It has a few annoying aspects, such as the plot not being terribly good (though if you're into "mindless shooters" that shouldn't be a problem) and there are a couple of frustratingly difficult parts but I don't think they're enough to drag it down.

Possibly Final Fantasy X, its one of the most accessible JPRGs in terms of combat, and grinding is kept to a minimum, which tends to plague the older JRPGs, if you can deal with that, there is a lot of quality in them, but I would most definitely not start there. FFX has some of the worst characters and storyline in the history of JRPGs (and thats saying something), so if you're in it for story/characters, look elsewhere.

Valkyria Chronicles is also a great game, not a JRPG in a traditional sense though, more of a Turn Based Strategy game with leveling and stat mechanics. Be warned though, mission 7 (I believe it is) is a newb killer, but the missions after that are well worth the trouble, and theres no grinding required.

Lastly, like most people here will say, you can't go much wrong with the Persona series, P4 is the best starting point, its the most accessible. The rest of the Shin Megami Tensei series are just as good, but some of the older ones are balls droppingly hard, they will put hairs on your chest, thats for sure, so start with Persona.

Play Tales of Vesperia for the XBOX 360 (You can download it from Live) It's a gorgeous game with great characters, you won't regret it. My little nephew is okay playing it so I think you will be fine :)

It's also great in the fact it doesn't have turned based combat but a kind of street fighterish mechanic so you never get bored in fights.

Oh and despite being anime looking it deliberately breaks a lot of the tropes of JRPG's.

In your opinion - in mine, the characters and story are downright fantastic.

OP, whatever games you're considering, please don't take anyone's word for it here that a game is complete shit or absolute gold - take what seems to be the general recommendations and do some of your own research (trailers, basic synopsis's, etc) to help decide. It'd be a real shame for you to not try FFX, in my opinion, since its my favourite game of all time.

To be honest the FF games while not all of them are as good as some people say they are(also not as over rated as others say) and that includes FF VII they are probably the best to break you into JRPG mechanics. Aside from FFVIII and you'd more be looking for PS 1/2 ones and the SNES ones to keep it somewhat recent.

I'm gonna also have to vote FF. Fairly straight forward to get into, but deep enough to keep you interested. I'd personally avoid FF8 if you're new to the series though, the character boosting system (junctioning) can be a bit daunting at first.

I think Rogue Galaxy qualifies as a JRPG, and it's a nice transition from action hack-and-slash type games into the JRPG genre. Okami as well, though that's a bit of a stylistic exception.

And the Final Fantasys, as many people are saying, are just great JRPGs. My first were JRPGs were FFIX and The Legend of Dragoon, so those are number one on my personal suggestion list.

EDIT: Ooh also Dragon Quest: the one I specifically played was VIII. Never quite beat it, but that one is definitely a fun one to check out.

Chrono Trigger. It was the first JRPG that I ever played. I was seven and I managed to beat it, so I'm pretty sure a newbie could handle it. I have no idea how many hours I've put into that game in my life, but I'm sure it's more than any other game I've played. So yeah, I like it. Maybe you will too.

I see no Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, or Golden Sun on that list.

I am disappoint.

Those three are definitely what I would use to introduce someone to JRPGs. Golden Sun is arguably the easiest to play, so I'd go with that one.

Persona 4 is very easy to get into, in my opinion. You also don't have to grind (at least on normal) and the story is quite tight.
