I like to look at what the Bible has too say when it comes to what Love Truly is.

Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy.
Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude;
It is not self-seeking, nor easily angered.
It keeps no record of wrongdoing.
It does not delight in evil,
But rejoices in the truth.
It always protects, trusts, hopes, and preserves.
There is nothing love cannot face;
There is no limit to its faith, hope, and endurance.
In a word, there are three things that last forever:
Faith, hope, and love;
But the greatest of them all is love.
Yup thats exactly how I see love and people should see it instead of saying its lust.
I usually resent anything Bible related, but I have to agree with that. That's one of the best definitions of Love I've ever read.
For me, Love means being completely devoted to the happiness of someone else, even if that means sacrificing your own.

I hate seeing this thread. People's answers are always invariably more depressing then the question (or the situation the invoked it).
Agreed, but what do you expect from a site thats mostly filled with misanthropic teens?
I don't expect anything less, that's why I hate it whenever someone makes this thread.

Certain chemicals in the brain like Oxytocin or whatever cause love.

However, love defined by me would be the ability for someone else's mood to affect yours. Like for instance if someone I "loved" was sad; it would have negative affect on my mood. Inversely someone I "loved" was happy; then that would positively affect my mood.

it's that feeling you get where you feel like you could spend all of life with them by your side, and who see's your faults, but looks past them, etc. someone who make you happy to still be alive.
Damn it I wanted to do that.
Just as I saw this thread, I thought about it :D

OT: I guess we all have our own definition of what love is. I think of love as being connected to your mate, knowing, experience & living together.

If we knew what love was, then it wouldn't be such a big deal when it screws you over. It is, in fact, the strongest emotion that will make you ignore all others, and all logic.

Love is the intersection of compatible personalities (friendship) and physical attraction (lust).
I like that one.

From the things I've heard throughout life, love is either a battlefield, a drug, a lie, a game or "BABY DON'T HURT ME, NO MORE".

Honestly I have no idea, I guess it differs depending on who you are talking to and in what situation of his/her life that person is in. I'll give two examples:

1) A person has found the love of his/her life and has a good and steady job and couldn't ask for anything else in the world. This person would probably tell you that love is something that everyone should experience and is one of the greatest powers and emotions in the world.

Example two comes from the manga Naruto (I don't know if it contains spoilers for the anime watchers) and even if it comes from this show I think it has some truth to it.
2) A person who has lost everything and is in the middle of war would probably think something like this. Love is the thing that feeds all hatred in this world. When someone you love gets hurt by another person/being you automatically start to dislike that person and your love against the person who got hurt feeds your hatred against the one that hurt her/him. Patriotism = love for your country which would make you defend it to the bitter end would feed hatred against the country you are in war with. Religion, one of the greatest factors for war according to some people, your love against something you believe in which would make you protect this sacred thing and your comrades who also believe in this even with blood. And so on.

My point is that depending on your situation love can be two different things, And every person has their own definition of this thing called love and it can change dramatically depending on what happens in your life. The two examples above are two extremes and there is probably a lot in between. I still don't have a definition for this and I doubt I will ever find the complete definition for this word.

Love can be the greatest emotion when it goes right and then it can be the worst when it goes wrong.

I've been informed I, nor anyone else, has any idea what love is, or at leas the amount of love one can give, until they have children. I've been told this by parents of all kinds, including mine, and have come to accept it, it's just something that can't be described yet there. I might as well also say that "love" at least as a term, has been so overused that it has lost its significance and we must find a new word to replace it.

Love is a chemical imbalance of the brain in which invokes chemicals in which forge the feelings we call "emotions", for the purposes of partnership (to not be alone), and for.. well, sex.

It can a deadly serpent, or it can be a bright light. In non-metaphorical terms.. it can suck, and it can be great.

There isn't really a middle ground. People either think it is magical, or hate the idea of it. I'm in the first category.

"Love and other moments are just chemical reactions in your brain.
And feelings of agression are the absence of the love drug in your veins.

Love and other socially acceptable emotions are morphine.
Cleverly concealing primal urges often felt but rarely seen."

- Gunning Down Romance by Savage Garden

While what causes love may be chemical, it can still seem magical when you feel it. I am an old fashioned girl, hooked on the idea of true romance so, I voted yes.
