As is custom where I live (understandably due to our country often having lots of snow and/or mud or dirt roads), I usually take them off. Also, it's more comfortable

In my own home I wear slippers. In someone else's home, I'll usually keep them on unless they request that I remove my shoes, or if they have a really nice carpet, or my shoes are dirty.

So you're saying that everybody who wears their shoes indoors is weird and everybody who doesn't is normal? What is "normal" and "weird", exactly? If "normal" is what everybody else is doing, the it sure is odd for you to not wear your shoes indoors because everybody else you know does it.

I don't wear my shoes indoors a lot, but I do walk to my room and take them off in there.
hmm, i wasn't intending to get to philosophical about the whole whats "normal" debate, i just want to talk about shoes : )

But to try and clear up the apparent contraction for you on balance more people that i know of and out of all the peoples houses i have been in in my life more people have left their shoes at the door, but a lot of the people whose houses i go to regularly don't and think that shoes are the feet nature was to lazy to give us from the birth.

I generally take mine off inside a bulding, you know unless it's a school or a gym or a store.

At home I wear slippers, when I'm somewhere else I keep my shoes on out of respect to not shove my stinky feet up their noses ^^

I think it depends on where you live, and the season.

I live in the north eastern US, and it is currently winter, thus, everyone takes their shoes off upon entering a house as to not track snow and water all over the place.

But in the summer, if its a nice day, its not that uncommon to wear shoes around the house.

I'll wear my shoes inside because sometimes, I just forget I'm wearing them. I've been known to wear my shoes literally all day. This happens about as frequently as I take them off. Yeah, I guess that makes me half-weird...or twice as weird.

I keep my shoes on. I wear slippers at home sometimes but if I've put my shoes on, I tend to not worry about taking them off unless comfort/cleanliness becomes an issue.

I rarely if ever take my shoes off when going round somebody else's house (again dirt and comfort exceptions). It just seems odd, walking around in socks, in some other house; almost childish.

Most of the people I know take their shoes off somewhere else in the house or they don't take them off unless they're done going places for the day. So how would I answer your poll? Either I say "I'm weird and insane" or I say "I'm normal and sound-minded". Maybe in the future try not to make your polls self-incriminating.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure most of the people who don't take off their shoes don't think that shoes are the feet nature was too lazy to give them. You're only perceiving that thought because you don't understand why they don't take off their shoes.

I take my shoes off. I didn't even know people keep their shoes on indoors until I went to the US. I guess it has a lot to do with climate. When there is no rain, dirt mud or snow I can see why people would wear shoes indoors. But where I live you are guaranteed to track snow and mud into the house.

I always keep my shoes on until I'm going to have my feet up on some furniture (This is where I will admit to being wierd, I always sit cross-legged on couches and non-wooden chairs), and then I take them off. I guess I could take them off at the door, but I kinda prefer having my shoes on for the most part (no, I don't put my shoes back on just for walking around the house, that'd be wierd).

Feet are nasty. I take my shoes off if I go into someones house, but you will never see me sockless.

Seriously, feet are gross.

This is a pretty strange assertion.

I've travelled a lot, and been all over the place, and it is far more usual for people not to take their shoes off, than it is to remove them. (unless you live in Japan, that is.)

Besides, if you take your shoes off, then you subject everyone around you to the stench. XD.

I suspect it might be something else though, since most of the places I've been have been major cities.

... If you've been trawling through mud all day, then obviously you don't want to drag that through a house.
But... Otherwise, it doesn't really make much difference.

Personally, I don't even take off my shoes in my own home unless they start to irritate me.

The idea of me wearing shoes while I am sitting around my house is utterly ridiculous, I mean, they are shoes for christs sakes! I want to be comfortable!

I have never understood this particular custom,

When i go to other peoples houses as i do in my own home i take off my shoes when i come in through the door, out of politeness and to show some respect by not treading my dirty shoes round their home if for no other reason. Then everyone looks at me like i just cut open their dog and started wearing it as a sweater, and ask "dude, what are you doing"

I'm taking off my shoes because this is a HOUSE!!!

I see a clear distinction between the hard, rough, painful surfaces of the outdoors and the nice soft carpeted surfaces of the indoors therefore the time of the shoe has come to an end as i transcend the doorway from the former to the latter. So i will leave them by the door ready to put them back on when i next leave the comfort of the house.

Most of my friends and my girlfriend keep their shoes on and they think i'm the weird one!!!

So i'm putting it out there, whats the 'normal' thing to do, do you take off your shoes when you come home or go to others houses or do you keep them on??
Depends on the culture In japan it's considered polite to remove shoes when in someones residents or other certain areas though other places it's seems odd to remove your shoes when visiting someone elses home since it emplies you might be staying for quite a while which could be seen as rude.

Basiclly it's wierd both ways for from the otherside.

I think that in Japan, taking your shoes off when entering a house, shows respect and it also prevents the tatami (the straw mats in more traditional japanese houses) from getting damaged. I live in Finland, and I don't know any or have never met anyone, who wouldn't automatically take shoes off indoors. I think it's some U.S thing, keeping shoes on indoors?

By the way, studies show it's more healthy to walk barefoot than with shoes.

Usually take my shoes off - don't like getting mud around my room (uni accommodation) and mum'd kill me at home.

However at someone else's house I see what they do - my best mate and her boyfriend's parents don't give a damn, and as they have quite narrow hallways we just leave shoes on (which is helpful as I'm usually wearing my Doc Martins that take a month to lace/unlace). Other peoples' houses I'll take them off if they do.

At home I prefer to walk around barefoot. But then I have Hobbit-feet so can walk on glass etc. without too much damage, and they're so hairy they don't get cold. At the girlfriend's flat I'll take them off, because we're usually sat on(/in) the bed, and shoes + bed = unnecessary dirt.

Right now I'm wearing shoes - was out smoking a few minutes ago, and have to cross a carpark to get to the launderette in a bit.

Don't like the poll - no middle option, and insinuates some people are weird.

oooook, i think someone needs a hug!!

Its a thread about shoes, lighten up a little bit or perhaps i should just stop replying and making you angry....

Either way i'm not one for leaving people out and you sir/madame (sorry i'm to lazy to clarify) can rest assured that i will go to absolutely no length to make sure you are not excluded from this footwear habit oriented poll.

So to clarify,

By wearing shoes indoors i mean do you walk around pretty much all of the time in a house with your shoes on with no intention of taking them off until you have to,in which case your answer would be "YES"

OR

Do you come into a house and take them off pretty much straight away? it doesn't matter if its at the door (like me) or in the hallway or basement or even the bathroom sink if you don't wear shoes in the house for general everyday being in a house kinda things then you will answer "NO"

OR

If you have not feet then you answer, well that one kind of explains itself.....

And for future references i hereby renounce the accusation that people who wear shoes indoors are weird, we should treat these people as normal human beings and let them live among us as equals.

For Umberphoenix has a dream, a dream where the son of a shoe wearing man and the son of a non shoe wearing man can sit down together at the table of brotherhood....

consequently the text in brackets can hereby be ignored as childish humor.

With the exception of (i am an amputee), if you are an amputee then i make no attempt to make a joke out of such a predicament or suggest that it is in any way humorous and apologise for any offense caused.I implore you to share you're thoughts about shoe wearing and shoes in general with us, do you wish you could wear shoes? when you had feet what type of shoes did you wear? if you had feet would you wear shoes indoors? are just some of the valuable contribution i would like to hear from you.

I urge anyone to please contact me immediately if any other discrepancies are effecting your enjoyment/ability to participate in this thread, i am an equal opportunities poller!
