From what I've gathered (which consists entirely of the crossovers on Halolz), the show basically plays out like what would happen if you asked a bunch of 5-10 year old boys to write a show for 5-10 year old girls. So basically, something for everyone.

And of course, it goes with Guile's theme

It's starting to look like ponies go with everything too.

On Topic, I'm not sure myself. For girls, they may be attracted to the femininity of it. For all, including guys, it gives you a bit of a thrill to collect something that makes people wonder why you collect them. I should know. I've been collecting caps since I was in third grade.

i just wonder why. is there some new series? is it just another nineties-revival? some word-of-mouth wildfire?

My girlfriend has made me watch a few episodes. It's surprisingly not terrible!

I definitely find it pretty watchable. I don't love it or anything, but I'd certainly wouldn't mind watching it.

Well, 2/3 of what you said really, it is a new series made by Lauren Faust, who's responsible for the PowerPuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. She decided that rather than do what the previous generations did aka, thirty minute commercials for their toys, that she would make a show instead.
It gained popularity when the /co board on 4chan decided they were going to get The Hub and tear every single show apart for how awful it was, but one show proved to be too much, even for them: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Think of it, a board of 4chan thought this show was too good to tear apart.

This has been gone into in depth in the mid-parts of the thread. In short, yes there was a new series, and its drastically better than the old one, very meme-able, the reason being that most people think it's gunna suck but find out it's actually quite good, which compels them to watch more, get hooked, tell friends, rinse and repeat.

Also, wow these threads are crazy fast at expanding.

I believe the love affair with MLP is because of all the jokes only (mostly) adults will pick up. For example, the Benny Hill chase scenes, or Rarity singing "riding high on the flank, don't want to make her look like a tank" in Suited for Success. Yeah, she said tank, but we ALL know what she really meant.
