You always have the right to defend yourself from anyone. I find starting fights with anyone to be pretty shitty, though.
I've had guys pick fights with me. I've got scars on my knuckle from where I knocked out some dude's tooth. I may have walked away bruised and sore, but the punk got his ass handed to him by me (I'm a girl and he hit me first).

Don't hit first... Hit last.

@Mimssy; may one inquire wtf he started a fight with a girl for?
That's generally a bad business decision, win or lose.

He said I shouldn't be on "his bus" (I was on the bus coming home from school, though the grade I was in eludes me). He called me some names, I walked away, said I was disrespecting him by walking away, he grabbed me, and then hit me. He was 2-3 years older than me and bigger than me. I don't know what his problem was.

That's a very situational question. Getting beaten up is never good, but beating anyone up for no reason is never good either. However, I will say that I make no distinction about who I hit back when attacked. I've lost two perfectly good teeth because I thought I shouldn't hit a girl back and just try to calm her to keep backing off.
I've never really hit anyone without the intent of defending myself. Tends to be I tell them I'm going to hit back. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

So yeah, I've hit a woman. Actually, women. This is not because I feel like I should hit women in particular. Just as I've hit men. For the same reasons, no extra hate or anger for either. I'd like to think myself gender equal, at least in this case. Equality doesn't mean I'm going to be extra nice to one side, it means I'm going to be treating both equally. I really would rather not punch anyone, but I'd rather not get punched either. So if it comes to that, then it really doesn't matter whether they have a pair of testicles or not.

I will say this. It struck a special nerve with me once, some time back when I was still studying. There was this very big, strong (as in, weightlifter) girl once. She beat people up exactly due to the fact that it's generally considered bad to beat women up. And she was more buffed-up than most men I've seen, and tall. There was more it it, I'm sure, but I never knew what it was all about.
It wasn't me who hit back, since I never had to come face to face with her (and thank whatever deity you believe in for that, she would have floored me). It was some other guy. From what I hear, he had had some serious problems with being abused, and went what is scientifically known as batshit crazy when she forced him to fight. Broke her jaw and nose (and possibly something else, I really have no idea) and knocked her out while screaming. There were paramedics and the police involved. I never really saw the fight, but from what I understand it was a nasty thing.

Getting beat up by a girl. Depends on the girl, but I don't buy into the concept that every girl on the planet falls into the group where it's "not okay" to hit them, ever. So who knows, maybe they had it coming and are more manly than any man you know.

Of course, I don't see the sense in beating anyone to a pulp regardless, but man or woman, I have no objections to doing as much damage as needed to stop them from doing the same to me.

Beating up a girl.

Getting beaten up by a girl means she started the aggression. It sucks, but why would it reflect badly on you?

I blame society for my indecision.
Thanks to history, the view of society is a tuned down version of "women stay home and make babies, clean, etc., men go out and bring home the bacon." although that has been changing lately.
Women are just as physically capable as men, if they choose to maintain that level of fitness.
I think that the choices have to be more specific.
For example, if I end up "beating up" a girl because that's what it takes to prevent her from harming me, then yes. If ANYONE attacks me out of the clear blue sky, I will defend myself.
That being said, there is no excuse under the sun for beating up a girl without provocation.
As far as being beaten by a girl, that's cool because then she is stronger/better at fighting etc. and there is no shame in losing to a superior opponent.

SO, as my final answer, beating up a girl with no provocation is worse.

Depends on the situation, beating up a random innocent girl is one thing, beatin gup a girl who comes at you with an attitude fists first is another.

I see no reason why we should discriminate. Why is hitting a woman bad but change the gender to a man and everything is just fine? Equality means equal treatment and true equality means equal treatment no matter if you have a dangler or not.

Doesn't that sorta apply to...everyone? My answer was generally based on the presumption that the real decision was whether or not one's decision to retaliate to imminent physical assault is influenced by gender.

...sounds to me like his problem was he was a pussy who couldn't find anyone ELSE to throw his weight around,
and didn't realize you were THIN ICE.

I bet he drives a big SUV and has monster truck posters up now ;)

Beating up a girl. Real men, real 'gentlemen', don't hit a lady. No matter how deserving she is of it.

If a girl is whaling on you, you stand there and take it and stare her down. Or you subdue her using a non-lethal take down move that doesn't involve punching her in the face.

Or be like me, rip off her face, and slaughter her family.

I've never needed to physically harm another person, man or woman, to end a conflict. Martial arts are very good things to know.

That said, police have to restrain women, and they get the crazy ones on drugs and alcohol to deal with quite often.

not just sorta, it absolutely does.
HOWEVER, the "power" in this thread comes from the added stigma of it being female, and, as I have said elsewhere, we retain some (some) chivalrous notions from our past when they were more obviously functional.

Before i get SMASHED, flamewsie for the horrible nazi sexist bastard I no doubt appear to be...

Let's say a tribe loses most of it's males, it'll probably be ok if doing so kept the immediate threat away... there will be a next generation.

Should a tribe fail to protect it's females, well, it's fucked.

RTS parallels? I won't go there.

* this forum needs a "like" button, quite a few of the posts here made me laugh it up *

I don't understand people who are just looking to get into a fight. The only time I hit someone first is when they threw out a gay slur to my friend and threatened to rape her (because, you know, if she was with a "real man" she wouldn't be a lesbian anymore).
