Alot of the time I see games that are all graphics, story and action but what would you prefer and why?

Because all I see in some games, is grinding actioan, good graphics and piles of supid, so if I were to make a game, I'd wanna know what people prefer.

i went with story, as although i do love graphics (i love crysis but its probably more the sandbox gameplay) nothing and i mean nothing has been as good as deus ex for me yet, i dont know wether its the story that does it (id say so) but ive replayed that more than anything.

story AND lenght really, but i voted story, gears of war is an example why i say both, the story sounds good and all, but its to fuckin short to actually get you hooked.

Gears of War didn't really have a good story. It was just the usual post-apocalyptic future dross. Plus, Epic, attempting to pull a Half-Life, made the revealed information in the game so vague and ambiguos that the only way to find out what was going on was to read the free book that came with the Limited Edition.
I voted action, but what I mean is fun. I don't care if a game has a plot as thin as a spring roll, mediocre graphics, is short, has bad AI or whatever. I'd still play it if it was fun.

well yea, your right, fun is just the main aspect, it just has to fit your interests, but story just is a major fun factor for me (if its a good one ;P)

and on GoW, yea i guess your right, but i love post apocalyptic stuff to much so i like it, to bad i dont have the book thing you mentioned (never heard of its existance XD )

It came with the Limited Edition, which, for some strange reason, was cheaper than the normal version in my local GAME store. Basically, it had some information on things like the Berserker, Fenix's father, why Fenix got imprisoned etc. The rest of it talked about 'Destroyed Beauty'.

Setting. (Which some confuse for "story".)

It's why licensed titles sell so well; folks already want to be part of the [movie/novel]'s setting. It's why I enjoy the Warhammer 40k game series and Halo series; big, epic, sweeping settings within which players can find their own stories to tell. It's why folks enjoy sports games and Rock Band. Us gamers don't enjoy pushing buttons; we enjoy immersing ourselves into the settings of our games be it Hyrule, Tatooine, Aperture Science Enrichment Center, Wrigley Field, a packed concert hall, or Omaha Beach.

For me, game play and mechanics thrive (or die) depending upon how well they support this immersion into the setting... at least for the main titles.

I still haven't figured out what draws me in on the casual/arcade fronts. Maybe sound... I pumped a lot of quarters into Outrun even though I sucked at it on the strength of the visceral power of it's sound design.

I go with Gameplay... Oh wait, that wasn't an option... WTH??? Graphic's are nice but if there is no gameplay, the game SUCK, Grinding is an example of gameplay which in excess SUCKS, Stories are great but I don't buy a game to watch a movie or read a story. I buy books and got to movies for that. Length depends on replay, if there is little replay then make it long, if there is a great replay value then length doesn't matter as much. Action, well again this is vague and is an example of gameplay. Crayon Physics has action but does that count for what your asking or are you looking for combat action??? Speed??? Is this how fast it runs on a machine? or Are you thinking Causal vs Something more Hard core? So to sum it up, IMHO, If a game has great Gameplay, graphics makes little difference, length is variable, Action and Grinding are not options as much as aspects of gameplay, and well Story is Good but again optional.

Any gaming writer will admit that story is not necessary for games. Need proof? Katamari Damacy barely had anything to justify its goal. While I do love a game with good story, games like Indigo Prophecy show you that if that's ALL you concentrate on, things are bound to go hairy. I voted Action.

Story, for the most part. If a game can make you sympathize with it's characters and care about what happens to them the I think the story is a success. But a good game is more than that. It's about combining a compelling story with an efficient way to interact with the world and it doesn't hurt when that world is captivating to look at either in terms of style, beauty or detail.

Length however I don't think is a factor. Some people swear a 40-60 hour RPG is minimum. But it's really difficult to keep you engaged and the plot constantly moving for that amount of time. I prefer an 8-12hr long game myself. About the length of time it takes to read a good book.

Oh and never ever make me go kill a monster for 50exp x1000 to gain a level so I get a spell so I can progress through the game. That is poor game design of a bygone age. Which is why I refuse to play MMO's anymore.

DAMN, that's so good it should've been mine.
Anyway I chose story, I mean the final fantasy 7 has sort of killed people with it's final fantasy goodness and I would just love to play a game with that story decency and depth in a first person shooter, and also maybe a fiew of the graphics that are in metroid prime 3. I find that most games are story and graphics, or depth of a spoon shoot em up.

Ooh, good one indeed, Hat!

I can't resist agreeing with you, Wolfy. I'd like to play a game from this generation that has well-woven stories especially in game genres that lack in that department. I know it sounds ludicrous, but I've always wanted a Demolition Derby game with a good story or at least with good characters (thus making it Twisted Metal Black minus the guns and adding a point-system).
