I've been watching a lot of movies recently... well, movie reviews, and a lot of points I find are regularly touched upon as to where a movie went wrong. Based on those recurring issues, and my own, I've compiled a list of possible answers to the question in... well... question. Anyway, I'd like to know where my fellow Escapists stand on the topis of what is the number one problem with movies today?:
Lack of Originality - We all know that any successful movie is bound to have about 5 sequels these days, and unpopular ones will probably get at least 2. In addition to that, however, we see movies such as "No Strings Attached" come out just weeks apart from movies like "Friends With Benefits". So is this sequelmania, coupled with recycled plots to blame for the general stagnation of the films industry today?
Studio Executives' Meddling - Stop me if you've heard this one before- you're watching a horror movie, and the killer has his victim cornered, and just as he raises his knife... it cuts to another character. See, these days execs go nuts trying to force PG13 ratings onto Directors. Why?, because it makes movies easier to market. Now I'm not saying the movie business shouldn't try to make money, but where I stand, in show biz, the show should come before the business.
Add to this also execs forcing more niche movies to try and draw from outside their demographic as well. We all know the Green Lantern movie sucked, but if it focused less on the love story, and more on Hal actually just being Green Lantern, it could have actually been decent, or at least not hated by just about every fan of the GL books.
Bad Writing - This probably doesn't need much of an explaination, so how about it? Do movies suck because more and more movies like Transformers are being created? Ones that are doomed from the start because the writer doesn't know his ass from the All Spark?
Overreliance on Special Effects - Tired of 3D?, I know I am. I'm also tired of movies like Avatar, where all I hear about is how damn pretty they look. Sure, but is there an interesting plot to go with it? Are the characters enjoyable? Will it make me laugh, or feel anything beyond boredom? To me, when a movie maker like James Cameron puts one of these flicks out I feel like they're saying "The average movie goer is an idiot! Watch as they line up by the millions to pay me $10 to watch me jingle keys for two hours".
Other - There are a few others reasons movies suck at the moment. Maybe you feel it's the fact that most female characters have about two personalities - "Damsel in Distress" and "90's Girl Power" chick. Maybe it's the fact that you are sick to tears of vampires. Whatever the case, this is the category for you then!
Nothing - If you're thinking right now "Hey Joe, movies these days don't suck, YOU suck!" then click here. You'll be wrong (and a jerk) but hey, we're all entitled to our own opinions.
