I love me some Water magic, and when that is not available to use in a game, I tend to go with Ice.

You're only saying that because your Avatar is a frog, which was a hero from Chrono Trigger who was named Frog. He was under the water element but used ice magic.
ITS NOT A FROG, ITS A HYPN-ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!

It's the hero Frog from Chrono Trigger until I say otherwise.
Well you keep saying that, because Chrono Cross was infinitely better than Trigger. If I was going to have a Chrono-Based avatar, it would be Greco, a psychic fucking luchador.

*gasp* How can you even say that?!

Chrono Trigger is the sex!!
As far as I'm concerned, its not even in my top 10 RPGs of all time...It is THE COOKIE CUTTER RPG, mind you, it was also likely the mold for the cookie-cutter RPG, which is high praise. Heck, Secret of Mana and Earthbound are likely better SNES RPGs than it, from my limited experiences with them: i.e.- videos and screenshots. But alas, the only one of those 3 titles to have a port on consoles I own is CT. LEGEND OF MANA WAS AWESOME! WHY CAN'T I PLAY SECRET OF MANA? WHY?!!!!!!!!!

Oh man, I fell in love with that game. It was excellent! I just really did like it, and the audio I thought was great too! I never played it, from what I've seen from screenshots it doesn't look all that special. What makes it good?
Legend of Mana gave you freedom, freedom up the fucking ass. You could build your own weapons, make your own spells, set your commands to do cool stuff other than Block and Jump, such as crazy flipkicks and a healing crouch. Any monster in the game, aside from bosses, could become your ally with a little monster egg hunting. You build the world from scratch by placing items that becomes town and dungeons, you adjust the difficulty by placing items further from you house to make them harder. You create golems, you can ignore quests or just go kill dudes, you can go to the fucking underworld, you can grow fruit off a giant trees, you can use any type of weapons you want, from Flails to Gloves to Bows. And most importantly, NICCOLO.

Also, the DS port of CT far exceeds the PS1 port, which had load times for the fucking status menu. OF 10 SECONDS OR MORE!

fire, with lightning trailing a close second. I don't know why water is so popular. seems kind of useless in comparison to the other options IMO.

(In other)Time. With time, you can can not be killed if you stop time before anything that could kill you happens. You can live forever, can do ANYTHING you want when time is stopped, can lift anything because gravity needs time to react, therefore causing everything to be as light as air, can kill anyone with one punch because your speed would be so fast that it's force would be lethal, and the list goes on. Only problem is that you'd have to constantly be moving to keep clean air around you, because the air won't move alone.

Dark(ness). Not for the Goth-ness of it or "oh look at me THAT'S RIGHT ***** YOU CAN'T". Well maybe the last one, yeah.

Darkness has always interested me. To me, it's the primordial state of existence and the base state of the universe. And sleep. Easier to sleep when it's dark so yeah. Bitching. And theoretically I could do the whole "getcher ass outta here light" thing. And there's just something mystical to me about turning darkness into something tangible/controllable/etc.

Earth!
Fire!
Wind!
Water!
Heart!

With your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!

Just kidding.
Depends on the game, as many have stated.

Fire is flashy, but gets boring: ooh, more ways to burn people! Whee... Not. Unless a game is really smart and allows fire to lift you to new places (hot air rises and all that) in which case it can get interesting.

Generally I'll roll with some shadow/light and electric dudes.

Earth, it's versatility makes it my favorite. Being able to control the very earth around you is more deadly than any other force from my perspective.
