Whatever you fit the Dreamcast into, that was the best console evar. Graphics as good as they need be and no longer a limitation and some of the best games around, close second by the N64

I would have to say the PS2 and Original X-Box generation was one of my favorite generations. That was the generation that most of my favorite games were released. I still remember seeing the commercials for Kingdom Hearts and absolutely loving it and the music. The first Mercenaries game is one of my favorites. Much better than the sequel they came out with. I would love to see an HD Remake of that.

I really liked the playstation 2. The Jak and Daxter games were some of the best that I have ever played.

Gotta give it to the PS3/Wii Gen 7 era.

I feel as though I'm among the minority when I say that gaming has vastly improved over the years. It introduced me to motion controls which was amazing for games like golf and tennis. It introduced me to Rock Band whose drums gameplay made it my favorite game of all time. It had above average installments of the classic zelda, mario and metroid franchises as well.

On the PS3 front I got to play my all time favorite sandbox game inFamous. The uncharted series offered a glimpse of RE4 style pure 'fun' but with good controls and a less cheesy story. Just plenty of great experiences in general what with Dragon AGe and Mass Effect trilogy and Street Fighter 4 renewing my love in fighting games.

My runners up would be the SNES generation followed by the gamecube generation. I grew up prior to NES but I was at my gaming childhood prime with SNES. I'd have logged the most time in that gaming generation and played the most games then thanks to rental stores. Gamecube was simply my favorite all time system but as a generation of consoles it's pretty meh. Not enough to give it the win.

Definitely Gen 4. In my stupid fantasies where I dream of being an indie developer, I dream of making games that play like SNES games. But maybe a bit prettier. Cuz, y'know.
I dunno. Late SNES games could be quite amazing graphically.
Though 'late' is a bit extreme for the snes, because some of the best looking games are ones made as late as 1999... Seiken Densetsu 3 does amazing things visually, and tales of phantasia had stunning water reflection effects - which the GBA re-release completely dropped. (it also dropped the intro song, which was a complete song with lyrics, though badly encoded.)

You can do a lot while staying within the bounds of what an SNES can though. Although to be fair, you can do a lot more on a modern system, which, say, Mighty Switch force demonstrates pretty well. Run that at old TV resolutions (480i) and it looks pretty similar in quality to a good Snes or Mega Drive game.
But run it in 1080p and you see it is considerably more detailed than that...

It's either 4, 5 or 6 for me. 4 because of Super Metroid, as well as many others including shoot 'em ups and certain RPGs. And back then and probably still now, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the shit.

5 with my N64 and PlayStation. I loved Ocarina Of Time, Majora's Mask, Lylat Wars, and many other 64 games. On the Playstation, I couldn't stop playing Twisted Metal 4 and some others, as well Castlevania: Symphony of the Night needs to be mentioned. And I used to play on the Saturn at a friends and we had a great time with Power Stone 2 and certain others.

6 with my Gamecube, mainly because Super Smash Brothers Melee. We just couldn't put it down. We had many tournaments during the span of 8 YEARS! Also Metroid Prime is cool.

Sorry, I can't pick one

I've always been a PC gamer, but for consoles, Gen 5, namely the PS1 and Saturn, so many awesome games. Xenogears, Shining Force 3, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter Alpha 3 the list can go on for days

It's a very tough decision between 5 and 6. I'm old enough I've had a console in each gen. And gen 5 was really good. Had you asked me during 4, 5, or 6 I would have said each time that current gen is better than everything before. So I'll have to say (logically I suppose) that 6 must have been the best. Even though more of my "best games ever" list are on 5 gen consoles... I still have to say gen 6.

Was a tough call between Gen 5 and 6.

On paper ps2 has all the games of the ps1 so therefore the combined ps1 and ps2 library should make this an easy choice right?

Except no, I still remember the impact the original playstation had and how it made games look less nerdy. People were playing wipeout in clubs for gawds sake, that's the impact it had at the time. The "wow" factor was strongest with the ps1 imo.

So voted Gen 5, with Gen 6 as 2nd choice.

Gen 6 for me is the best because games had enough complexity to allow for amazing/unique stories and experiences but were cheap enough to produce that companies could take risks because they only needed to sell a few copies to start turning a profit instead of the current trend where every person on the planet would have to buy a copy for them to break even.

The SNES still wins my heart after all these years. Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Zelda: Link to the Past, among many, many other classic games. It's amazing what could be done with a 16mhz processor back then. Gen 6 does get my second vote, because 3D no longer was in its infancy, and we had none of the publisher bullshit we have had with the current and last generation.

Voted gen 4 because I had alot of fun with my Megadrive. I had a Saturn after that, it had some good games and it was really underrated but Sony's marketing power really dominated. And since then I've been primarily on PC.

The Spectacular Now: I've been playing since the '80's, and I don't believe the medium as a whole has ever been more diverse or as ambitious. Greater integration into mainstream culture's a positive, too, I think.

The heyday of the Amiga was pretty great, and the PS1 era was arguably the most important/influence period in gaming history, as it catalysed a pivotal moment in the mediums evolution. But no amount of rose tinted spectacles can deny just how far the whole thing's come, so yeah, I vote for the here and now.

...wait, I just looked at the results: am I the only person who picked that option? Yikes.

I had the most fun gaming in the PS1 era, i was young, a bunch of friends would come over to play, but that has nothing to do with it being the best, just nostalgia.

Gen 6 for me. I suspect it's partly down to the fact that it's the console generation I was using when I became a lot more into my gaming but you can't deny there was a ridiculously strong set of games released during the generation. The Xbox had some solid shooters in Halo, fantastic RPGs like Morrowind and Jade Empire and the best slew of Star Wars games for one console since the SNES! The GameCube has my favourite entry in the Legend of Zelda series: Wind Waker and the PS2 had everything else. The PS2 has to have one of the best libraries of any console thanks to both a whole wodge of awesome first-party games and probably the best third-party support of any console. I don't know how much of this is nostalgia, but I do kind of feel like it was the last generation where innovation and entertainment drove a lot of game design as well, leading to franchises and games that I just don't know would ever get made in the subsequent generations, like Okami, Kingdom Hearts, Viewtiful Joe, Katamari Damacy, Gitaroo Man - those kind of either quirky or joyful games that these days don't seem to get investment if they aren't an existing franchise.

It's a tie between 4 and 5.
The SNES and PS1 still have the two best game libraries ever made by a MASSIVE margin.

6th comes in a close 3rd due to the PS2.

3rd and 7th are tied for 4th due to the NES and a smattering of decent games

8th currently comes in 6th until someone aside from Nintendo can finally get their shit together. If everyone was as good as Nintendo, 8th Gen would already be moving into 3rd.

PC is exempt as a pan-generational ubermachine with which no console can compete.
