I'm just want to ask before V comes out and becomes everyone's favorite for at least a year: what's your favorite GTA game and why?

Mine is San Andreas because it was huge and there were tons of cool in game rewards like respawning military jets.

Definitely Vice City :)
The city, the characters, the style, the 80's.. still remember cruisin at sunset hearing Crockett's theme on the radio.

I can understand that. Another reason San An is my favorite is Master Sounds. James Brown goes really well with car chases.

I'm torn between Vice City & San Andreas. San Andreas has the better overall gameplay, but Vice City has the unmatchable atmosphere. You feel like you're in the 80's. I just can't choose between my two loves!

The first one as I actually had some fun with that. 3 bored me to tears and was when I bought out of the series. Vice city would be second as I got some enjoyment from it if only for a few hours and 4 was even worse than 3 imo.

Yeah I dont think the series is for me I really dont get the appeal I played the ones after 3 round friends houses for a few hours so 1 and 3 are the only ones I spent significant time with but to this day there has been no game that has disappointed me as much as GTA3.

I dont have a problem with people playing or liking the games though but personally I find them extremely boring and tedious. No doubt I will play the new one a little bit as one of my friends is bound to buy it but it will take a lot to win me back.

I have never played GTA2 or San Andreas.

San Andreas for me, but GTA IV is a close second because I just love the driving mechanics. I like how the cars are actually a little hard to control because it actually makes things fun. Sure, it's fun with some whacked out insanity of driving 200 km/h and still being able to make sharp turns, but I want more. That's what I like about GTA IV and if it was less Bowling and drinking it would have been my favourite.

San Andreas was just fun. It wasn't realistic and it didn't pretend to be. The plot was stupid and silly which all fit the theme of the game. San andreas wins for being the complete opposite of GTA IV except for the girlfriend thing where she keeps pestering you which is similar, but not quite as bad...

san andreas. i like the scale of it. it's not limited to a single city like the others, and has a ton of scenic variety. i haven't played IV, but i imagine it's just as claustrophobic as the rest of the gta's that aren't san andreas.

San Andreas hands down and I fucking hate the entire "gangsta" thing, but because they do so many things right it just doesn't matter overall, it was that perfect mix of serious story done in a silly way, equally in story and gameplay.

Sadly after that GTA went serious on top of serious glazed with dull, which equals immensely depressing.

I actually have four GTA games (the PS2 trilogy and IV). However, I've only played like two missions of III, and it didn't do much for me.

Does III just suck? Or... is GTA a series you don't play for plot? I'm pretty out of the loop. Only thing I know is that most people think San Andreas is the best.

I love San Andreas because of how huge it is, the map, the diverse gameplay and the cheats available. I prefer Vice City's soundtrack and atmosphere more though, but it doesn't offer as much as San Andreas does. And I prefer CJ over Tommy.

GTA IV meanwhile is my least favourite game of all time.

If Red Dead Redemption was an option I'd have chosen that.

I just can't get into GTA games... I think it's the context: I have no interest in being a part of the criminal activities you take part in in GTA, but will gladly take on the role of a badass wild-west gunslinger in RDR.

The only one I had played before this year is IV, now having played 1, 2, 3, VC & SA too I must say Vice City, the shooting is a little off and San Andreas plays infinitely better, but the whole 80s Miami Vice thing taken to such an over the top extreme is far more entertaining than anything any of the others had to offer, 4's good too and I liked Niko but I don't know Vice City clicked better with me, you'd think I'd like San Andreas better since I do actually like Hip-Hop and plays better, but I find Carl to be a horrible person and I hate him, which is kinda dumb given that this is GTA, but I think Tommy was better because he was kinda cynical and was pretty much a self aware character, not necessarily of himself but of how ridiculous the world and characters of Vice City were and I found him to be an entertaining asshole rather than a hateable one.
Anyway I just found Vice City more entertaining.

As much as I like Vice City's atmosphere and style, I never got into it as much as I did with San Andreas. The area size, aircrafts, customization and humor made it the best GTA game for me.

I liked Vice City and 4, for differing reasons. VC was a blood-soaked tour of '80s culture in Miami, and it was full of dumb fun and a lot of crazy laughs, that none of the other ones seemed to spur from me. GTA4 and its episodes were a mature take on crime, the people behind it, and a brooding analysis on the "American Dream", as nebulous of a concept as that is. Both are two sides of the same coin of cynicism, with GTA4 being like its Batman, while VC was its Joker.

I'm really liking GTA IV at the moment. GOt it recently. Only played III and San Andreas before it. They were ok, I liked them for different reasons. But I am really liking GTA IV for something different. I can't quite place it.

It's not he bowling though.

San Andreas. It's got three whole cities. Three! I also thought it had the most epic story. And it has a jetpack.
