Aliens. While I do love the first one, the sequel fleshed out the universe and was, in my opinion, more interesting.

Aliens. First one was kind of weird, 3 and Resurrection screwed up the plot, AvP plagiarized the plot of Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, and AvPR was just a pointless gorefest. Aliens, on the other hand, was directed by James Cameron and had plenty of space marine goodness, so it gets major win points.

Defiantly Aliens, the plot and characters were well developed and the action was awesome as well. Although I also enjoyed the first film which I found a little bit scary.

The first two were the best without question. I personally like the second one a bit more than the first, but its a close call.

I like all of the original Alien films... the AvP films weren't too bad...
As for favourite... maybe the first one? Or perhaps Alien 3...
Really, I love them. Some were better than others, but they all brought something new to the table.

I still think Aliens shat all over the premise.
But since people have a tendency of sending me hate mail when I confess to it, I won't go into detail.

The original is the superiour work in my book; but I'd like to step in and defend the savagely underrated Resurrection, seeing as it took the barren shambles of Aliens and Alien³ and turned them into a fascinatingly surreal film.
You know, despite Joss Whedon's awful script.

It also has a pretty sublime score.

Alien and Aliens are the best two hands down.

Of the two I do like Aliens more than Alien, but for different reasons.

Aliens 3 was still fairly decent and Aliens Resurrection was, erm, "entertaining" I suppose.

The first Aliens VS Predator was bad, but in the sense of "So Bad It's Good." I don't regret buying the DVD for it out of the $5 bargain-bin.

As for the second Aliens VS Predator? Awful.

AWFUL.

It was a senseless gore-fest from the word go that seemed to exist for no reason than for the director to be able to say, "What over-the-top needlessly gory thing can I do next?"

Gah.

I'd like to see the day when someone actually comes along and makes, you know, a proper Aliens VS Predator movie.

Aliens.

I respect what Ridley Scott was doing with Alien and it's a very good film, but there's a certain pomposity to Scott's films that, IMO, prevent them from ever being real classics (Bladerunner may be the exception).

Alien 3 was the weakest to my mind, the special effects were... not good. But it was still pretty decent. David Fincher is kind of like Ridley Scott in some ways, he's a good director hindered to some extent by some vague sort of self-importance (although I really loved Fight Club).

And I have a definite soft spot for Alien: Resurrection. Jean-Pierre Jeunet is probably my favourite director of all time (Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, Amelie, brilliant films). I thought Resurrection was really very interesting indeed. But it wasn't as good as Aliens.

As for AvP... I refuse to even consider them.

District 9's not on this list? That's EXTRA heretical. [http://1d4chan.org/images/8/8c/Fucklaw.jpg]

I'd probably go with District 9, Avatar, if it counts, and definitely the original Alien.

I had to back the original just cause of the underdog rule but do agree with everyone else here, the second one really fleshed out the universe far better. It is one of the rare examples in film where the sequel was as well thought out, if not more so, then the original and not designed just to tap into a franchise.... sadly the sequels of the sequel where typical of sequels designed to tap into a sequ... I mean franchise.

By far it's Aliens for me, despite being old it is still fun to watch to this very day as a piece of popular culture joy, it's a great piece of cinema that I will remember for a very long time to come.
The sheer fact that Aliens turned a simple story about a spaceship with an alien on board into a full fledged franchise with a backstory and developed universe that is still making a profit to this day is a testamony to that fact.

Aliens. James Cameron know how to do a good film. Don't count AVP, Ripley wasn't in it.

Aliens strikes me as superior. Especially if you watch the extended version which fleshes out Ripley's motives to save Newt.

The first one was exceptional but a bit of a slow burn as far as I am concerned. I have a short attention span and these days needs movies to get the hell on with it or I lose interest (when I saw Titanic I found myself muttering "oh for god's sake, hurry up and sink").

I also love that Aliens - as opposed to later examples of the franchise - uses practical effects over CGI. The Alien Queen herself is an absolute masterpiece of menace and horror.

Hated the third one - I really hate the trend of killing of major characters in the false belief that it is somehow dramatic and impactful when all it does is make you feel betrayed over the emotional investment you have had in hoping that Ripley makes it.

The 4th one was interesting and I would have liked to see a bit more set in that point in time. But it never had the resonance of the second one and does have some cringe-making bits in it.

All of A v P can go to hell. They took two strong franchises and chopped their nuts off. I hate the Hollywood need to make every thing PG-13 or soft R (which equates to a 15 rating in my country). The Alien and the Predator are horrifying, brutal creations and diluting that is a pathetic insult.
