Half-Life 1 because I always think the original is better than the sequel. Besides Team Fortress 2 it blows Team Fortress Classic out of the park.
pssh, what server where you playing on? :p

The original gets my vote because it was one of the best games I've ever played. I love it and I still have a copy of it for the PS2 at my house which I still play on occasion.

I really liked all of them, but I'll go with Half-Life 2, so many memorable moments.

Although I've beaten Half Life 1, I haven't finished Opposing Force yet, but I'll do it eventually.

Oh, and honorable mentions to Episode 2 for taking second place. I loved the scene with the advisor (the one in the barn). And I've played that particular one about 3 times...and no, it wasn't JUST because I forgot to close the hatch for the gnome the first time...though that was one of the main reasons. XD

Episode 2 is my favorite installment in my favorite video game franchise. It's gripping from start to finish. I was disappointed by Episode 1 the first time I played it (though I enjoyed it a lot more the second time through), but Episode 2 did pretty much everything right. The only criticism I have is that the antlion caves got a little bit tiresome after a little while. (Oh, and I'd like to see Barney in Episode 3, please, Valve.)

Here's the hierarchy:

Episode 2 - pretty much perfect
Half-Life 2 - the most amazing video game experience I'd ever had up to that point
Half-Life - still better than the vast majority of modern games even by today's standards
Blue Shift - really short, but stupendous for every second that it lasts
Opposing Force - more of a full game than an expansion pack, really
Episode 1 - a really good game that wasn't quite different enough from Half-Life 2 to drive me crazy the same way the rest of the franchise has. Still superior to almost every other modern game.

I'd have to agree with Good Morning Blues about Episode 2. while HL2 was, and still is, amazing, somehow I found episode 2 a more involving game, possibly because of the inclusion of Alyx as a sidekick for the great majority of it: it somehow humanises the game slightly more than the original, and I found myself caring a lot more for the story than in HL2.
I also have to agree that Episode 1 was somewhat disappointing: it didn't do anything wrong, per se, but it lacked the epic feel of the original, but had none of the variety of the second episode.

I haven't played either of the expansions to the original: I take it from this thread that they're recommended?

You need Opposing Force, Blue Shift and
Decay!

They're all separate games and there's space in your poll.

Opposing Force is my favourite.
Mainly because the weapons in it are completely mental.
There's an electric bug you steal from the corpse of an enemy, a Squid Bazooka, a Machine Gun so powerful it makes you move backwards when you fire it, a Deagle with a laser sight, Snarks, a Barnacle (yes, you get a barnacle to use as a weapon) and the original version of the Portal gun.

The portal gun in particular is brilliant, using it's secondary fire opens a portal to a random destination, sometimes you get something good, othertimes you immediately fall to your death.

The actual gameplay is much the same as Half Life, but your tag along buddies are more effective this time, did I mention the brilliant weapons?

portal.....
But that's Portal, if it were Half Life it would be called Half Life: Portal, not just Portal. Think about it...

Asking this question is like asking me who's my favorite naked girl, Hard choice since I like them all. But I guess the best of the best would be HL2

Episode 2 is my favourite, it looks the best, runs the smoothest and actually uses Alyx to fill you in on story and backstory. This is based on the 360 version though, I'm sure they all run quite similarly on a PC.

As others have said, this is a tough call. HL1 was ground-breaking, and while I loved the game, I didn't finish it. I became entirely too frustrated with a specific jump puzzle. I knew the solution--that part was quite straightforward--but it was a case of being able to manipulate the controls fast enough to be able to navigate the course.

HL2 was a more polished venture, and I thought was overall more accessible to those who'd never seen HL. Yes, the player needs good twitch, but while I thought that HL1 cheated on occasion, I always thought HL2 played fair. The addition of developer comments also enriches the appreciation of the game design. Word to developers: if you're creating a rails game, study Valve and take lots of notes!

I also like the value in gameplay from a hardware perspective. Valve didn't

All that said, I've very much enjoyed Episode 2. I like the added backstory and interaction between Alyx and Gordon. The G-Man, too, has become even more interesting. I'll confess I've not finished the game, but this time because I don't want it to end. It'll be a while before we see Episode 3!

Is there any offical word on this or is that just because it hasn't been referenced thus far in the Half Life games that came later?

I know! i loved op force, more than the orignal game, it introduced an entire new species of alien that could easy be incorpareted into the main story.

But out of the choice i would say episode 2, it was perfectly crafted. I love all of them though. You can argue epsidoe 1 was the weakest, but still better than most fo the stuff out there

Half-Life only started getting great for me in Eps2. I just didn't get what the fuss was about up until that point. Half-Life 2 was a drag and Eps1 was nothing special.

I love both Half Life 1 and Half Life 2..But my favourite is HL2 mainly cause its diverse and more polished. While 1 is an amazing and groundbreaking FPS, HL2 is fps perfection...Like The Godfather 1 & 2. The first one is beutifull and enganging while the 2nd is movie perfection.

Since I can't play Half-Life 2 anymore because.... I don't know (maybe because it's boring) I have to vote for the first one.

Yeah I loved 2 with a passion. It still is one of my favourite games of all time, and while Half Life started it all off, I still enjoyed the polished feel of 2.
