No Argonians? I call racism! What have you got against scales?

Seriously though, Argonians are awesome. Lizard people! And you can have them with weird little feather things in their... horns? Spines? Whatever it is, it's awesome.

I preferred Nords, partly because I just liked having the Nord-specific war paint (the band across the eyes), and the frost resistance was quite nice (nothing is worse than fighting a frost-enemy, and by the time you get to them you don't have enough stamina to block/power attack).

Apart from Nords I'd normally go with Imperials (because I like money) or Khajiit (and become a werewolf :p). One exception is if I'm being a vampire I might go Dunmer (still normally pick Nord, but might) simply to counteract the negative fire resistance.

Did... did Bethesda mean to do this? it sounds like a stupid question but it just seems like they would have made a bigger deal about it ingame, if only to try and show off. I've probably missed something but even though the lore is good, the elder scrolls have never had the best story telling in the world.
It's just, to me, this seems like a happy coincidence more than effective writing... credit where credits due though; it makes the ending a lot more meaningful, props to Bethesda if they did consciously write it.
Yes, Elder Scrolls series lore writer Michael Kirkbride, also known as MK on the official Bethesda forums, the man who basically wrote Morrowind, wrote Mankar Cameron's speech in Oblivion, and rote the Knights of the Nine DLC, is the guy who wrote all the Talos stuff, and all the mythic merging.

You will be surprised to find that MOST of the Es lore isn't actually in the games.

Did you know that the REAL reason Dagon was able to invade in Oblivion was NOT because of the dragonfires being out but because a series of magical towers that hold up the world had fallen?
Did you know the Divine Crusader from Knights of the Nine was a time traveler from the future?
did you know akatosh and Lorkhan are the same person?
Did you know sithis is Lorkhans father in the same way god is Jesus father, being that they aare technically the same person?
Did you know Talos is Lorkhan?

I don't have Skyrim, and I don't much care for Morrowind or Oblivion, but starting in Daggerfall I always preferred a male Argonian. I like them better that cat-people for a Thief.

Something about being a Nord and having your homeland in danger makes their race all the more compelling. Plus, they're friggin Vikings... you can't beat that.

It takes so long for archery to really come into its own as a viable primary weapon that choosing a Wood Elf seems silly. Sure, in the long run you can fire cruise missiles of murder that can one hit anything shy of a powerful dragon with ease, but for the first 20 hours using a Bow alone is a dangerous gamble.
Not if you're sneaky, like my Wood Elf.

Arrows flyin' out the shadows an' shit. Been playing that way since Morrowind.

Nords have frost resistance which is insanely awesome and they look and sound pretty badass.
Bretons are also pretty cool and great for magics.

So either of them.

For Skyrim in particular? The Argonians look AMAZING. What, they're not on the poll? Well, the Khajiits look pretty awesome too. What, they're not on the poll either? Umm... well... Orc, I guess - I would've gone Breton if it were Oblivion, but the Orcs look much better now.

In Skyrim, probably Khajiit. (no option on poll) grrrr.

In TES in general, definitely Dunmer. Not only are they bad ass (if slightly effeminate in Oblivion) they have one of the best histories in the series. Seriously, read the battle of Red Mountain sometime. The tale of how they changed from Chimer to Dunmer is pretty frickin' sweet.

Basically the Dunmer were originally a sub-group of the Altmer called the Chimer. The Chimer left The Summerset Isles to follow the beliefs of the Psijjic endeavor, the means to achieve god-hood by finding CHIM, set forth by Lorkhan, and taught to them by the Daedra.

The Chimer went to Morrowind and there they lived with the Dwemer, The Dwemer being huge dicks frequently tired to kill the Chimer.

The Chimer and Dwemer united to fight the Nords, but later the Dwemer found the heart of Lorkhan. The Chimer feeling that the Dwemer might destroy the world with its power asked the Dwemer to not use it. The Dwemer basically told them to FFFFFFFFF off and so The Chimer united under Lord Nerevar, and his Generals Almelexia, Sotha Sil, Vivec, and Nerevar's friend Dagoth-Ur.

Together they fought the Dwemer at Red Moutain were the Dwemer disappeared because The Dwemer ended up merging their entire race with a giant robot they were building.

Nerevar not knowing what to do with the tools that the Dwemer used to manipulate the heart, went to consult Azura and left Dagoth-Ur, who later become corrupted to guard to the tools. When Azura told Nerevar to destroy the tools Dagoth-Ur refused to surrender them causing the Second Battle at Red Mountain.

After Dagoth-Ur and his house were beaten, Vivec, Almelexia and Sotha-Sil murdered Nerevar to use the tools to make themselves gods.

Azura in revenge for killing one of her champions cursed the entire Chimer race, turing thier skin dark and eyes red, into the Dunmer was we know them.

It's not specific to Skyrim, but my favorite race in The Elder Scrolls is the Dunmer. First, their society was marvelously fleshed out in Morrowind. Second, they make agile warriors and spellswords. Finally, I like playing as a cursed race. Dark Elf: meaning interchangeably dark skinned, gloomy, or ill-favored by fate.
What this man (or woman) said. Dunmer are awesome.

First off, did you play Morrowind? If so, this is going to make a lot more sense. I don't have a lot of time right now, so I'll give you the short version.

If you're interested in the whole story, go here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Battle_of_Red_Mountain

The Dunmer, as we know them today, actually started out as golden skinned elves (kind of like the Altmer, but less yellow more gold). However when the Tribunal, who were the council to Lord Nerevar, used Kagrenac's tools to attempt harness the power of Lorkhan's Heart, "then, in that moment, all Chimer were changed into Dunmer, and our skins turned ashen and our eyes into fire".

Why this happened is up for debate. The Tribunal, by using the tools, were betraying an oath they made to Azura. When she confronted them, they scorned her and proclaimed themselves the new gods. It was at that moment the change occurred. This has led some to speculate that it was a Curse by Azura.

However, she replied "This is not my act, but your act. You have chosen your fate, and the fate of your people, and all the Dunmer shall share your fate". Suggesting that it was the use of the tools that caused the change. However, it should be noted that she never outright denies cursing them.

That's the short version. I suggest checking more sources for the full version. Like I said, it's very interesting.
