I have noticed that a lot of people here on the escapist work in customer service so I want to know what your manager is like?

An explanation of the choices:

Tyrant (aka Slavedriver)- A manager like this expects all employees to work hard and be on time. This manager doesn't want you to like them. They want you to work hard. Don't let this guy catch you slacking because it could cost you your job. They won't compromise or admit to mistakes. This manager is not afraid to curse at their workers if they screw up.

Friendly (aka Buddy)- Managers who prefer type are often open and kind to their workers. They will engage you in a conversation during work and will even go so far as to forgive workers who make big mistakes. They can sometimes be taken of advantage of due to their trusting nature.

Efficient (aka Time is Money)- It is easy to see why this manager got to where they are because they work hard everyday even doing jobs that they don't have to. They differs from the Tyrant because they are willing to work with their workers to get the job done. They also differs from the Friendly type in that they doesn't really talk to their workers that much. They aren't strict but they will always give punishment where it is due.

Incompetent (aka Bumbler)- This manager makes you wonder how they ever got to their position. They are always making mistakes and fail to inspire anything in workers but pity. They are often lazy and will even leave work early causing confusion amongst those who work around them. This manager is the worst by far because he fails in every regard unlike other managers who have a few good traits. Working under this manager is a nightmare because neither efficient nor fun just confusing.

I have added an Other option for those who wish to describe their managers differently than above. I also encourage any managers to describe themselves.

Edit: I forgot to add an other option but I fixed it.

I've been through the lot of them, and I have to say a combination of Friendly and Efficient works best for me. They're extremely lenient but will only take so much mess from goof-offs who don't really give a fuck about the job, and axe 'em. Which is awesome, because I hate picking up others' slack. I don't like working hard when I don't have to.

Does anyone have any stories about their managers?
I'm no story-teller, but I did once have a manager in retail (small chain store) that once showed up a half-hour before the end of the shift, when the store closed. Still wearing what she wore to the party. I mean, I liked how laid-back the people were there, but damn. One of the laziest co-workers I ever met.

My boss is awesome. (I work at a guitar shop) We frequently have conversations about music and stuff, an he's been to see everyone, about 5 times. And he seems to know everything there is to know about guitars.

Old one was really a buddy type, I was 18 at the time and worked in a Drug store with a really overstressed and soccer crazy boss.
When the local team (Nac Breda) was playing he'd close 15mins earlier to get to the stadium etc, sprayed our hair on queen's day and carnaval.
About 3-4 months before I left the place to find a new job he got caught up in his paperwork to wrap up 2007's fiscal year and hed leave me in charge of the shop basicly. wich was quite cool because I was 18 at the time and my co-workers on those days ranged from 16 to 22.

New one is strict but fair.

Well my immediate supervisor and I are friends. But at work we only talk when he's either pointing out new issues or I need his input. Our work as tech support for web hosting sucks. So it's put a lot of stress on our friendship. Now the tech support manager is a different story. This guy can be really cool at times and is always friendly. But christ he has a tendency to say the stupidest things. The last time we spoke as a matter of fact he was chewing me out because another department manager was upset at the way I spoke to her agent. And he's trying to tell me to take my complaints to him rather than voicing them to whomever I have the problem with. But he must have used the phrase "you have to take it with a grain of salt" about 120 times in a 15 minute conversation. He's a good guy and he works hard, but he just forgot what it's like to be a front line tech.
