I so wanted to like Halo back when it came out for the PC, but I've never warmed to it.
It wasn't until I gave the series a second shot with Halo: Reach that I really figured out why. The game just feels a bit deathmatchy, which is the big reason why I never warmed to Unreal years and years ago. Deathmatch is great in deathmatch (I love Unreal Tournament), but it just kills my interest in Single Player. Watching enemies hop around like I am just looks silly
I'm also not a big fan of melee attacks, so knowing that the butt of my assault rifle is the most lethal part of that gun just irritates me on a primal level for some reason.
And a complaint going back to the Quake days, I don't like Single Player games with MP balanced weaponry. I like a solid progression of weapon strength in a single player campaign. I also don't tend to like limited weapon slots in sci-fi games, since I'm reluctant to ditch a good weapon for something which (to me) is an unknown quantity. Yes, I'm the guy sticking to Earth weapons in Gears of War.
It's just a lot of design decisions that go against what I like in a shooter. I can tell is well-crafted, but it's a big pile of meh.
