When are there too many enemies?
I say it depends on the combat and enemy type (rather 10 headcrabs than 10 headcrab zombies), but the number matters too because I would run out of hitpoints really fast. about 20 is enough for me

When the host decides to spawn an additional tank in L4D, well, we usually run into the safe room like little pansies, and lock the door behind. ;)

Depends on the enemy. I can take on a hundred slow zombies or 20 fast zombies, but just one Uber-giant Golden boss of pure power.

Depends on the type of enemy... If its just something you can hit with 1 bullet and kill, then loads, as long as you have the ammo, and the guns. But like 2+ tanks in L4D is enough.

In an action game with competent A.I I can usually handle around 20 enemies at a time, if the A.I is PainKiller pathetic I can pretty much lay waste to 1 million monsters. In an RPG it all depends on how strong my character or characters are.

1,000 enemies is entirely possible to overcome as long as the battle system provides for it. God of War is an example where a battle against that many opponents is one sided (against the NPC's) {raucous laughter} but in crappy shooters or games like Too Human it doesn't work.

The ability to select priority targets, obtaining health bonuses for slaying so many enemies, and (I'm burning a copy of Too Human for this one) antidotes to combat status ailments are necessary to keep combat manageable.

Giving us a shotgun with 24 shells and throwing us into a room with 80 zombies wielding machetes and a giant robot crab will only piss players off.

FEAR 2 had enemy A.I. that was very clever. Most of the game was spend in coridoors and they weren't too hard to dispatch but during one level on a moving train thingy they swamped you and it became very challenging.

I would say too many enemies however is when they are fucking infinite like in COD4.

Call of Duty 3. Beat that on Veteran difficulty and you will want to kill yourself by the time you have finished.

Basically, if you are on one side of a river and the enemy is on the other you can't just pick off the enemies and then run over to the other side because the game constantly creates new enemy units to replace the ones you just killed.

So, you have to run over to the other side AND kill all the enemies until you are safe which, on Veteran difficulty, is incredibly hard.

Infinite Spawning Enemies = WORST ******* IDEA. EVER!!!

If you added up all my kills by the time i completed the game on Veteran i must have killed the entire german army and more.

Wasn't there a part in Kingdom Hearts 2 where you had to take down 1,000 heartless by yourself? That part was really fun though not really frustrating.

It really depends on what the combat is like/what type of game you're looking for, I'd think.

For example, there have been times in Fallout 3 where I've just wanted the constant one-after-the-other fights to end, because I was just trying to explore or whatnot.

Then there's Left 4 Dead. In which case the only response is "...Too many?".

Depends on the game

In Rise of the Argonauts I could take on 20 baddies at one

In oblivion I get swamped by 5

It totally depends on the game and setting. Mindless zombies? Throw hundreds at me. Super-soldiers? Ermmmm... >.>

Depends on enemies. Zombies, if I have lots of ammo, I can take plenty- but if it's a one-hit kill deal like Nazi Zombies, then no. If it's a hack and slash game, it's reasonably easy to take on a hundred, like in the Lord of the Rings games.

If enemies have guns, it depends on how many perfectly placed chest-high walls you're given.
