Everything on there except the } characters and spaces is an enemy, I'm the little blue @ symbol.

That is the only time I've complained of a game having too many enemies, and that was only because all the archon's kept blinding me and my spells of charm monster were weak.

The game actually crashed after that, so I didn't die at least :D

The 'heavy-metal-Doom-marine-gamer-maniac-one-man-genocide' part of me wants to yell 'you can never have enough enemies' followed by a huge roar and inhuman laughing but the civilised and marginally normal part of me would normally say 'as long as it's within reason and I get time to prepare for each encounter', so random encounters and entire leigons gunning for you are a tad shadey in my books.

The answer would have to be some kind of formula... the variables being:
F - friendly units (i.e. any units/characters controlled by the player and NPC allies)
H - Health of F
En - Number of enemies per unit of time
K - Time taken to kill an enemy
D - Percentage damage one enemy will do on average to the sum of H

so I reckon if EnD/FK > H, for the lowest reasonable value of K then there are too many enemies...

Now I need to speculate what kind of absurd state of mind I must be in to do that at 3:00am

Depends. If the combat is realistic (ex. COD) , I'd say about 10. If it's unrealistic (ex. Halo), just make sure they don't crowd the screen. Also depends a little bit on the enemy. If they're some kind of dumbass enemies that get killed in one shot and spend their short lives running in circles and missing every shot, you can definitely have more, but if they're some kind of man-refrigerator hybrid with an IQ of 210 and some kind of inhuman accuracy, then you obviously can't have very many.

Depends on how much ammunition I have available. Give me Duke Nukem's arsenal and a pair of needlers and I'll take on the world.

For about thirty minutes, by which point I'm reduced to my mighty boot.

Dead Rising just would be the same without the possibility of killing 53,594 enemies in a few hours or 1000 with your bare hands. However, it's a game designed for it and any game that features enemies close to you in any type of ability tends to suffer for it. Will Rock was a very silly game that had fights of as many as 20 at a time and was a shooter; it and Serious Sam were similar and it worked there because of cover and ludicrous overkill weapons combined with weak enemies.

Depends on how much aggro the fucking mage is generating.

Dammit, your AOEs do not make you GOD

*EDIT*

Where's the "No such thing" option?

If you can't make a decent dent in their numbers, then I'd say its too many.

For example, if you can kill 10 in 5 minutes, but they're arriving at a rate of 10 every 2 seconds, then yes, there is too many.

Entirely depends on circumstances but I believe one of the rules of combat from Murhpy is that:
"One enemy soldier is never enough, but two in entirely too many" :p

Depends. My general rule is when you are constantly backed up into corners or being knocked down to the ground and back down everytime you get up, then its too many. So it depends on the enemy AI tactics and abilites to knock you into your grave. If ten zombies keep knocking me over, its too many. If ten enemy soldiers are taking cover, using more advanced tactics, and not just doing banzi charges, then its fine.

There are many factors affecting this, from the game's control system and the types of enemies to the design quality and game difficulty. Ninja Gaiden II is a great example, as it screws up all of the aforementioned factors to deliver the virtual equivalent of violent sodomy (unless you're a gay man, in which case it's the virtual equivalent of sleeping with a woman with the lights turned on).
